Mr. Pornchai Nusith, the station master of Hua Hin railway station, revealed that this morning (June 25, 2024), he, along with expert staff from Thonburi Locomotive Works and related personnel, performed a ceremony to pay respects to sacred spirits for good fortune in moving the ancient steam locomotive "Baldwin Mikado 305" from its temporary location in front of the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course to be displayed at the new Hua Hin railway station. A crane and a large truck were used to carefully move the steam locomotive and its tender, completing the process around 3:00 PM.
The Baldwin Mikado 305 steam locomotive is an old steam locomotive that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) ordered from England (but it is an American train with a Japanese name). This locomotive was used before World War II, starting in 1923-1925, and was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, USA.
People in the railway industry used to call this vintage iron horse "Young Baldwin Number 305." It is the only American Mikado locomotive left in Thailand. It was decommissioned in 1966 after 41 years of service and was placed for tourists to view and photograph opposite the Phra Mongkut Klao Pavilion at Hua Hin Railway Station, becoming "Pu Baldwin Mikado 305," a valuable historical asset of the Thai railway.
In 2019, the SRT started the Hua Hin - Prachuap Khiri Khan double-track railway construction project, which required handing over the construction area at Hua Hin railway station to the contractor. Therefore, the Baldwin Mikado 305 steam locomotive was moved to a temporary location.
Currently, the double-track railway construction project at Hua Hin station is nearing completion, and a new track for the Baldwin Mikado 305 steam locomotive has been built. Today, Pu Baldwin Mikado 305 was moved to be displayed for tourists to take souvenir photos with the backdrop of the old Hua Hin railway station and the new Hua Hin railway station.
