A train collision occurred during coupling at Sala Thammasop Station, resulting in 5 passengers and 1 mechanic injured. "Surapong" orders the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to urgently investigate the cause and determine corrective measures, while ensuring full care for the injured.
Mr. Surapong Piyachot, Deputy Minister of Transport, disclosed after receiving a report from the Department of Rail Transport about the accident that occurred during train coupling on July 15, 2024, at around 17:00:
The accident involved diesel-electric locomotive number 4226 with two air-conditioned carriages, which collided with the stationary ordinary train No. 254 (Lang Suan-Thonburi) at Sala Thammasop Station, Thawi Watthana District, Bangkok.
The incident resulted in 5 passengers and 1 mechanic being injured and sent to the hospital for treatment. The two air-conditioned carriages suffered damage to their air hoses and had to be detached at Sala Thammasop Station. The SRT transferred the passengers to ordinary train No. 258 (Nam Tok-Thonburi).
Preliminary investigation revealed that at 16:49, ordinary train No. 254 arrived at Sala Thammasop Station and stopped to pick up and drop off passengers. The train driver then moved the train forward to the north of the platform to detach locomotive 4226 and couple it with two air-conditioned carriages parked on a siding. After completing the coupling, the locomotive with the two carriages was being reversed to couple with train No. 254 when a severe impact occurred, causing injuries to passengers and the mechanic.
The station master coordinated with local rescue teams for first aid and transferred the injured to Kanchanapisek Medical Center and Ratchaphiphat Hospital. Passengers from train No. 254 were transferred to train No. 258 bound for Thonburi Station. Train No. 254 departed Sala Thammasop Station at 19:30, 154 minutes behind schedule due to this incident.
Mr. Surapong stated that he has ordered the SRT to send relevant officials to investigate the accident site, determine the root cause, and establish corrective measures for operational procedures. He emphasized that the SRT should provide full care and compensation to the injured passengers and mechanic. The SRT currently has accident insurance coverage with Viriyah Insurance Company, which includes passenger protection.
Furthermore, he instructed the SRT to strictly enforce compliance with all rules, regulations, and train operating procedures among its staff to ensure maximum safety for employees and passengers.
