🔔Passenger Service Update✅
The State Railway of Thailand announces the opening of new double-track railway routes between Mab Kabao Station - Muak Lek Station and Ban Dai Ma Station - Khlong Khanan Chit Station, as well as the opening of Pha Sadet Tunnel and Hin Lap Tunnel.
🚂Effective from July 28, 2024🚃
Passengers can use services at nearby stations such as Mab Kabao Station and Muak Lek Station.
The "Daily News Transport Innovation News Team" reports that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has held a meeting with all relevant parties and decided to open the double-track railway project Phase 1 for the Northeastern (Isan) line. The section from Map Kabao Station to Muak Lek Station (km 134+250 to km 147+450), covering 13.20 kilometers (km), and the section from Bandai Ma Station to Khlong Khanan Chit Station (km 168+500 to km 198+200), covering 29.70 km, will be opened. The Pha Sadet Tunnel and Hin Lap Tunnel will also be operational from July 28, 2024, using the existing signaling system as the new system installation is not yet complete.
SRT is expediting preparations in all aspects to ensure the safest train operations and services, including emergency response drills in the Pha Sadet Tunnel. They are currently monitoring progress from readiness checks and rehearsals for the train service opening with all relevant parties. Simultaneously, they will consider work plans for opening other sections of the Northeastern double-track railway.
Mr. Surapong Piyachote, Deputy Minister of Transport, emphasized that SRT should accelerate the opening of services for the entire line by the end of 2025. Once the entire project is completed, it will reduce travel time from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima from 3 hours to 2 hours.
Currently, the civil works for the Phase 1 Northeastern double-track project from Map Kabao to Thanon Chira Junction, covering 132 km with a budget of 29.9 billion baht, are being expedited to resolve problematic areas. Contract 1, from Map Kabao to Khlong Khanan Chit, is 96.36% complete, 3.64% behind schedule. It's still in the process of private land expropriation due to the expiration of the Royal Decree on land expropriation in 2021. Particularly, the descent from Thailand's highest elevated railway requires expropriation through negotiation and reconciliation. SRT is seeking approval for an additional expropriation budget of 197.38 million baht. If approved by the Cabinet, construction is expected to be completed around December 2025.
Contract 2, from Khlong Khanan Chit to Thanon Chira Junction, covering 69 km, is undergoing construction design adjustments at Sima Thani Bridge and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) review. Contract 3, the tunnel work, is 98.18% complete, 1.81% behind schedule, and is expected to be finished around August 2024. Tunnels 1 and 2 are 100% complete, while Tunnel 3 at Lam Takhong is constructing the tunnel exit connecting to Contract 2, about 200 meters, expected to be completed around December 2024.
The Northeastern double-track railway tunnel project consists of three tunnels. Tunnel 1, located between Map Kabao, Pha Sadet, and Hin Lap stations in Saraburi province, is a twin single-track tunnel, about 7.50 meters wide, 8.50 meters high, and 5.20 km long, making it the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. Tunnel 2, between Hin Lap and Muak Lek stations in Saraburi, is 250 meters long. Tunnel 3, between Khlong Khanan Chit station in Pak Chong district and Khlong Phai station in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima, is about 1.17 km long.
The Northeastern double-track railway service, starting from July 28, 2024, will pass through 6 new stations, beginning from Map Kabao station, through Tunnels 1 and 2, then diverting right to the single track into the old Muak Lek station. The reason for not being able to run double tracks into the new Muak Lek station is that the descent from the elevated railway is not yet complete. From the old Muak Lek station, it will run on a single track to Bandai Ma station before starting double-track operations to Pak Chong, Sap Muang, Chanthuek, and Khlong Khanan Chit stations.
Although the opening of this Northeastern double-track railway section is not extensive, it will help reduce travel time by about 15-20 minutes and decrease train delays.

Ready for the opening on July 28, 2024, the double-track railway in the Northeastern line, covering the sections from Mab Kabao to Khlong Khanan Chit and from Bandai Ma to Khlong Khanan Chit, will pass through Phasadet Tunnel and Hin Lap Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the country. This new route is expected to be convenient and safe.
On July 28, 2024, the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) reported that they inspected the construction project for the double-track railway section from Mab Kabao to Chira Road Junction. The inspection covered Contract 1 (Mab Kabao - Khlong Khanan Chit) and Contract 3 (Tunnel Works), focusing on construction, facilities, safety, and services in preparation for the opening of the 42.9-kilometer double-track route.
The route consists of the Mab Kabao - New Muak Lek section (13.20 km) and the Bandai Ma - Khlong Khanan Chit section (29.70 km), set to open on July 28, 2024. The event will be attended by representatives from the State Railway of Thailand and the contractors, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited and Right Tunnelling Public Company Limited.
The inspection also covered the 13.20-kilometer section from Mab Kabao to Muak Lek, including the Phasadet Tunnel (Tunnel 1), located between Mab Kabao and Hin Lap stations. This single-track, double-track tunnel is 7.50 meters wide, 7.00 meters high, and 5.41 kilometers long, making it the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. The second tunnel, Hin Lap (Tunnel 2), is a single-track, double-track tunnel located between Hin Lap and Muak Lek stations, measuring 11.0 meters wide, 7.30 meters high, and 265 meters long.
The Phasadet Tunnel is equipped with comprehensive safety systems, including ventilation, fire alarm, firefighting systems, CCTV, backup power supply, lighting, intrusion detection, and gas detection systems (oxygen not less than 18%, carbon monoxide not more than 70 ppm, and sulfur dioxide not more than 0.2 ppm). If any values exceed the set limits, the ventilation system will automatically activate. The tunnel also features emergency telephones, SCADA, and fiber optic heat detection systems.
Additionally, the Phasadet Tunnel has an emergency evacuation walkway alongside the railway and cross passages every 500 meters, totaling 11. There are also five equipment rooms and a control room located above the northern end of the tunnel, overseeing and controlling the monitoring of any abnormalities in accordance with NFPA 130 standards.
On July 5, 2024, the State Railway of Thailand conducted an emergency evacuation drill for passengers in the Phasadet Tunnel. The double-track railway service on the Northeastern line will open on July 28, 2024, covering a total distance of 42.90 km from Mab Kabao station to Muak Lek station, passing through Phasadet and Hin Lap tunnels, before switching to the existing single track before reaching New Muak Lek station.
The elevated railway section at New Muak Lek station is still awaiting approval from the Cabinet for the reconciliation budget before construction can proceed. In the meantime, the existing single track will be used. The double-track service will resume north of Bandai Ma station at Switch 3 (Switch 102A). Northbound trains will pass through Switch 102B (locked in the turnout position) and continue on the double-track until Khlong Khanan Chit station. Bandai Ma station will use a single track for the southbound direction. The old railway line passing through Phasadet and Hin Lap stations will remain available for transporting cement cargo, with 8-10 trains running daily, including special tourist trains.
The opening of this double-track railway service will make it more convenient for the public to travel, with boarding available at Mab Kabao and Muak Lek stations. It will also reduce travel time and improve operational efficiency using the E-token system, which is safe and equipped with facilities meeting international standards.
