Thailand Invests Heavily in Northeast Infrastructure, Eyeing Regional Connections
Deputy Transport Minister Monporn Charoensri has revealed a significant investment push in Thailand's northeastern (Isaan) provinces. During a seminar in Sakon Nakhon, she outlined ongoing projects with a combined budget of 72,340 million baht, as well as additional plans totaling 5,645 million baht.
The seminar, attended by government, private sector, and local representatives from the provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Bueng Kan, focused on infrastructure development. Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungruangkit aims to strengthen domestic transport links and foster international connections with Laos, Vietnam, and China.
Key projects include:
Double-track railway: Ban Phai-Mukdahan-Nakhon Phanom route (budget: 66,785.53 million baht)
Highway expansion: Highway 2032 (budget: 979.4 million baht) and Highway 212 (budget: 669.4 million baht)
5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge: Connecting the Bueng Kan Province with Paksan, Laos (budget: 3,906 million baht, expected completion in November 2024)
These investments are predicted to boost trade, employment, and tourism. They are expected to streamline travel and facilitate greater economic development between Thailand, Vietnam, and southern China.

Latest progress on the Kiak Kai Bridge construction project: A new bridge across the Chao Phraya River will connect the Thonburi and Phra Nakhon sides.
The Department of Highways is in the process of acquiring approximately 7,000 rai (2,772 acres) of land, primarily agricultural, across three provinces (Udon Thani, Nong Khai, and Bueng Kan) for the construction of a new four-lane highway. This 155.288 km highway will connect Highway No. 2 (Mittraphap Road) to Highway 222 (Udon Thani-Bueng Kan), with an estimated construction cost of 19.73 billion baht.
The project's detailed plans have been submitted to the Land Ownership Office, and the land expropriation process, expected to take at least two years, is underway. The project timeline has been adjusted, with construction now planned for 2027 and completion in 2030.
The highway will begin at km 424+484 on Mittraphap Road in Udon Thani Province and end at km 155+171 on the Bueng Kan City Bypass. It will feature four lanes, each 3.5 meters wide, with 2.5-meter outer shoulders and 1.5-meter inner shoulders. The design includes three interchanges, seven bridges over local highway intersections, and one bridge over a railway. The project will also include 31 U-turn points, drainage systems, electrical lighting, and a rest stop.
This new highway is expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency between Udon Thani and Bueng Kan, reducing travel time from 3.5 hours to approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. It will also promote the export of goods through the 5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.

This video is about good news for people who frequently travel between Bang Pa-in and Nakhon Ratchasima. There will be a new section of the motorway open to the public by the New Year of 2025.
The Ministry of Transport has assigned the Department of Highways to expedite the construction of the Bang Pa-in Nakhon Racha Sima Motorway, Route 6. This motorway will be 196 kilometers long once completed. Currently, there is a 77-kilometer section open to traffic from Pak Chong to the Nakhon Ratchasima bypass. People have been asking when the motorway will be extended further because it gets congested, especially near Mow Lek, before reaching Pak Chong during festivals.
The good news is that the Ministry of Transport will be opening an additional 87 kilometers from Hin Kong to Pak Chong. This will increase the total distance usable from 77 kilometers to 164 kilometers. However, the newly opened section from Hin Kong to Pak Chong will only be open to traffic on one side because the construction on the other side is not yet completed.
The speaker from My Way Thailand says her team will be going to the field next week to record the condition, state of the construction site and the scenery along the new 87-kilometer section.
