KTMB to cash in on tourism industry
by Jonathan Chen,
THE EDGE DAILY 16 Jan 2008 11:24 AM
PENANG: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) wants to cash in on the tourism industry with its newly reinstated Ekspres Rakyat passenger train services, currently servicing the Butterworth-Singapore rail route.
KTMB Northern Region (Butterworth) manager Ahmad Shamudin Md Rashid said it wanted to tap into the demand for passenger transportation services, especially from Singapore tourists wanting to visit towns in Malaysia.
We are confident that our Ekspres Rakyat services will receive good response, more so with the governments decision to extend Visit Malaysia Year 2007 to Aug 31 this year, he told reporters after relaunching the service at the Butterworth train station yesterday.
He said rail travel also provided opportunities to tourists to view many interesting sights in the country, adding that trains plying the 774km (ยาวพอๆ ทาง ช่วงกรุงเทพ - ทุ่งสง - เขาชุมทอง) Butterworth-Singapore route would have to pass by 20 stops. including Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.
The Ekspres Rakyat service, which has been in operation since the 1980s, was halted in June 2001 due to construction of the RM2.6 billion Rawang-Ipoh double-tracking rail project.
Ekspres Rakyat provides up to three Butterworth-Singapore services daily on 10-coach trains with a maximum capacity of about 400 people per trip.
Ahmad said it was not uncommon for train seats to be sold out when the service was still in operation in 2001 and was confident that there would be a steady passenger increase in the near future. The demand for rail travel is still here as people are always on the lookout for alternative means of transportation.
Butterworth-Singapore train fares cost RM127 for adult (first class) and RM60 for children, while second-class fares are priced at RM68 and RM34 respectively.
In 2003, KTMB outlined a 17-year business growth plan comprising three levels a recovery stage from 2003 to 2006, a consolidation stage from 2007 to 2010, and the growth period from 2011 to 2020.

KTM to increase passengers to Kelantan by 30%
By C.A. ZULKIFLE
The Start - 17 Jan 2008
TUMPAT: Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Berhad wants to increase its passengers to Kelantan by 30% this year following the launch of two additional train services to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Last year, KTM recorded 1.3 million passengers. This year, it plans an increase of 30% based on the combination of additional services and the attraction of the "Visit Kelantan Year 2008" campaign, said KTM east coast regional manager Ibrahim Sulaiman.
The two additional services are the "Express Wau II" to Kuala Lumpur and "Express Timuran II" to Singapore. The two new services complement eight other daily services to the same cities.
KTM said it would also respond to passenger demand by increasing its train frequencies and coaches during peak travel periods such as school and festive holidays, Ibrahim said on Thursday after Wakaf Baru assemblyman Rosdi Abd Aziz launched the "Express Wau II" service here.
The "Express Wau II" departs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9.10am barring any technical hitches. (รถด่วนว่าว 2 ออก KL sentral ทุกพฤหัสบดี ศุกร์ เสารื อาทิตย์ เวลา 0910 มี 4 ชั้น และ รับผู้ดดยสาร 274 คน/เที่ยว)
It has four classes of coaches with an average passenger load of 274.
Ibrahim also announced that for this year, KTM would upgrade three existing stations in Kelantan which are Wakaf Baru (Tumpat), Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah and build two new stations in Gua Musang and Kuala Krai with a budget of RM14mil.
The new stations would facilitate train travel besides providing more amenities to passengers.
The railway operator has eight station passes in Kelantan and 41 stops where it also provides daily localised services to residents here.

Perak to have South-East Asias longest rail tunnel
By HAH FOONG LIAN
The Star - 24 Jan 2008
IPOH: South East Asia's longest rail tunnel will be built in Perak as part of the RM12.5bil double tracking project from here to Padang Besar.
Announcing plans for its construction in northern Perak, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the 3.3km-long Berapit Tunnel would be part of 329km-long double tracking project from here to Padang Besar.
"I would like to thank the Perak government for its full commitment in ensuring the smooth construction of the double tracking project," he said here Thursday after attending a briefing on the project with Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali.
Chan said cooperation from the state government was crucial in ensuring that the project would be built without any hitches.
He pointed out that the Perak government was asked to help resolve problems of squatters and land acquisition so that construction of the project would not be delayed.
"We need the state to help with the relocation of squatter families, surau (Muslim shrines), Hindu and Chinese temples," he said.
He added that the state government would need to help acquire 322ha of land in Perak which was in the way of the project.
The double tracking project from here to Padang Besar is made up of 171km from here to Butterworth and another 158km from Bukit Mertajam to Padang Besar, he said.
Perak, covering tracks measuring 133km long, would make up one of the longest stretch in the entire project, he added.
Chan said the Ipoh-Butterworth stretch would be given priority because it was a continuation of the completed stretch from

New Strait Times - 24 Jan 2008
On the Ipoh-Padang Besar rail project, he [Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy] expected it to be completed on schedule within five years as the state governments concerned had given their commitments to resolve all issues relating to land acquisition and squatter resettlement.
The 329 km RM12.485 billion project began on Jan 8.
According to Chan, the 133 km of rail construction in Perak involves resettling 300 squatter families and the acquisition of 1,200 lots.
This requires the assistance and cooperation of the state government, and the Menteri Besar has given an assurance and directed state officials to resolve the matter, he added.
The government has awarded the project to a MMC Corporation Bhd-Gamuda Bhd joint venture, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd.
Chan said with the completion of the project, Malaysia will have a double-track electrified rail link spanning the length of the peninsula, 635 km between Johor Baharu and Padang Besar.
This will be an integral component of the Asian rail network that will stretch from Singapore to Kunming in China and include the states in Indochina.
KTMB spends RM200mil on new intercity and commuter trains
By CHOONG MEK ZHIN and NURBAITI HAMDAN
The Star - 7 Feb 2008
KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) announced the purchase of extra coaches for intercity trains and commuter trains costing RM200mil in an effort to upgrade its services.
This move will temporarily relieve the problem of the lack of trains running right now, said KTMB managing director Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdullah at a press conference after handing out goodie bags to passengers at the Intercity KTM platform in KL Sentral here yesterday in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently chaired a Cabinet meeting and it allocated RM40mil for the 20 new intercity trains, said Mohd Salleh.
The 20 new trains will consist of passenger and power-generating coaches that will boost the number of intercity trains available.
We are preparing the tender and the new trains can be expected within two and a half years, he said, adding that the Government had approved the plan.
In addition, KTMB will purchase eight units of commuter trains for RM160mil.
With these new commuter trains, passengers will be guaranteed more seats, as there will be four coaches on each train, as compared to the three currently.
Apart from the additional trains, Malaysians can also expect to see electric trains travelling outside Kuala Lumpur boundaries for the first time next year.
Travel between Ipoh and KL Sentral, with stops at all major towns in between, will only take two hours and twenty minutes.
The trains are expected to run in 2009. There will be five trains with six coaches each, said Mohd Salleh, adding that the electric trains will cost RM260mil.
On a related matter, he said KTMB had proposed to the Government that it create a bypass line for freight trains travelling through KL Sentral.
The trains carry dangerous goods such as oil. We do not want anything bad to happen, he said.
KTMB is also upgrading the current single track to a double line between Seremban and Sungai Gadut and this will be ready by 2011.

MMC-Gamuda JV: Lead contractor for not identified yet
By Francis Fernandez
Business Times 22 March 2008
THE MMC Corp-Gamuda joint venture (JV), which is building a double-track rail line from Ipoh to Padang Besar, has not identified the lead contractor for the electrification and signalling systems contract, an official said.
"The tender submissions for the electrification package is still being reviewed, and as such no decision to appoint or shortlist has been made" an official from the JV, who declined to be named said.
The companies that submitted bids were Britain's Balfour Beatty plc and Westinghouse Rail Systems Ltd, Germany's Siemens AG , Italy's Ansaldo STS SpA and French conglomerate Alstom SA
Business Times was told some of the bidders were asked to clarify their submissions and that this could have been misconstrued as them being shortlisted.
Work on electrification and signalling systems can only take place when civil works are done. The cost of the work itself is subjective, depending on several factors such as government-to-government loan arrangements.
Mitsui Corp, Japan's largest trading company, had in 2001 secured an electrification and signalling systems contract valued at RM1.6 billion for 180km of rail lines linking Rawang to Ipoh, as the deal took into account credit provided by Japanese government-linked banks.
It is believed the MMC-Gamuda JV, budgeted as much RM3 billion for the electrification and signalling systems package.
The budget includes possible time-cost delays for the Ipoh to Padang Besar rail lines that run on a 330km track.
On Monday, a media report suggested a late bid by France's Alstom could potentially lower the cost of the package by RM900 million.
