First Myanmar Railway
The British occupied Lower Burma in 1852 and planned to build a railway in Lower Burma as trade flourished. Sir Ashley Eden, then Minister of Lower Burma, led the construction of the railway, and in 1874 a permit was granted to build a 161-mile railway from Rangoon to Pyay, 174 miles northwest of Yunnan.
From a British military point of view, Burmese royal troops from Upper Burma could quickly reach Pyay if they descended along the Irrawaddy River. It was first planned to build a railway from Rangoon to Pyay to supply food.

Measurements were made for the construction of the railway, and the 39.37-inch tracks were spaced 3 feet apart between the two tracks. It was planned to be 3.375 inches wide and transported from Karachi to Burma. Construction of the Yangon-Pyay Railway began in 1876 and opened on May 1, 1877 at a cost of 73,000 kyats per mile.
The Rangoon and Irrawaddy Valley State Railways are in charge of the entire train operation. The train was launched in Myanmar 52 years after the opening of the world's first railways, the Darlington and Stockton in Britain.
Eighteen stations were built between Rangoon and Pyay, of which the Kyeemyindaing and Insein stations, which were modeled after the British railway station, are still standing today.

Yangon Central Station and Pyay Station were built in 1876 with the construction of the Yangon-Pyay Railway. After the construction of the Yangon-Pyay railway, the 166-mile Yangon-Taungoo railway was rebuilt in 1881, and the 93-mile Yangon-Nyaung Lay Pin section was completed on February 4, 1884. The 73-mile Nyaung Lay Pin-Taungoo section was opened on July 1, 1885.
After the British occupied all of Burma in 1885, the construction of the 59-mile-long Toungoo-Railway continued.
Pyinmana Road was built on May 1, 1888

In the early days of Myanmar Railways, there were only 886 miles of one-way and 139 miles of two-way tracks. Where two-lane railways are being built, trains can travel longer distances at the same time. Within a decade, the rail network had been doubled to 1,529 miles of one-lane railways and 329 miles of Asun Dwe Road.
Administration
Prior to the construction of the Rangoon-Pyay railway, the British had been in charge of the railway administration, and the railway headquarters building was built in 1877 at the corner of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Sule Pagoda Road. The name of the architect who designed the railway headquarters building has not been recorded.

After independence, 2,493 miles of railways were built before 1988, and 4,288 miles of railways were built until January 2009, with 10,236 railway bridges and 812 stations. Construction of the Yangon Bypass began on December 10, 1958 under the caretaker government and was completed on March 19, 1959.
At present, the Yangon commuter trains are based at Yangon Central Station with a capacity of 200 trains. 30 shifts left; Turn right. There are 38 stations along the ring road. The raft is not on the ring road. Trains from Yangon Central Station also run to Thanlyin and Ywathagyi.
Yangon-Mandalay Railway Upgrading The Yangon-Mandalay Railway is a key corridor in Myanmar's economy and is currently being upgraded with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
