There is a very interesting picture in the gallery , taken by ter123, of 3118 running light diesel at Chiang Rak on 25th August 2011.
As Chiang Rak is well away from where this loco normally works, does anyone know where it was going and why?
A Google translation of its page on the SRT Mechanical Departements website mentions the word flooding. Perhaps it was to be used on a section of line that, due to high water levels, was unsuitable for diesel electric locomotives. |

Yes, as you understand. This loco was sent to the northern section, I guess now it is at Paknampho depot in Nakhon Sawan, to be stand by for flooding. |

Thank you. Yes, you are 100% correct! Its shown as being there on todays Nakhon Sawan movements report on the SRT website.
Presumably Thonburi will have to send a driver if they need to use it. I do not think that Nakhon Sawan crews would know how to drive it.

Back in the 1970's, when the Western Region of British Rail still had diesel hydraulics, in times of flooding some of the routes affected were closed to diesel electric locomotives, and only diesel hydraulics were allowed to work over them. It was a safety issue, as water getting into traction motors could be very dangerous. |
