The Nong Khai Station Master confirms readiness to operate the inaugural international passenger train "Bangkok-Vientiane", hoping to stimulate the transport and tourism sectors in the country.
Mr. Veera Charoenrang, Nong Khai Station Master, spoke about the State Railway of Thailand's plan to launch the first international passenger train service between Bangkok and Vientiane today (July 19, 2024), connecting Thailand and Laos. He stated that Nong Khai railway station has prepared both staff and facilities to serve the public and tourists, with preparations ongoing for some time.
Tickets for the international passenger train Bangkok-Vientiane have been on sale since July 10, 2024. The first train will operate on July 19, offering round-trip service. It includes 152 seats in 3rd class regular cars (fan) priced at 281 baht, 64 seats in 2nd class air-conditioned cars at 574 baht, and 30 seats in 2nd class air-conditioned sleeping cars with upper berths at 784 baht and lower berths at 874 baht. This train will be attached to the rapid train numbers 133/134. These prices are for departures from Bangkok Grand Central Terminal and are the maximum rates; prices decrease for boarding at other stations along the route. Additionally, there will be service on the Udon Thani-Vientiane (Khamsavath)-Udon Thani route with two more round-trip trains, rapid train numbers 147/148, totaling 4 trains per day. Ticket prices for Udon Thani-Vientiane are 100 baht for fan cars and 200 baht for air-conditioned cars; Udon Thani-Nong Khai are 30 baht for fan cars and 80 baht for air-conditioned cars; Nong Khai-Vientiane are 70 baht for fan cars and 120 baht for air-conditioned cars.
Interested travelers can purchase tickets and reserve seats up to 180 days in advance at all railway stations nationwide. Passengers must have a passport or border pass for customs and immigration procedures at Nong Khai and Vientiane (Khamsavath) stations before each international journey. For tourists, the Vientiane Transport Operators Association will provide shuttle services to various tourist attractions.
The State Railway of Thailand aims to facilitate travel for people of both countries, elevate Thailand's logistics system to become a regional hub, support the expansion of border trade between Thailand and Laos, and drive the domestic tourism sector with the launch of this international passenger train service between Thailand and Laos.

Today (July 19, 2024) marks the first day of train service from Bangkok's Central Station (Krung Thep Aphiwat) to Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) in Laos. The inaugural trip departs at 21:25.
Train No. 133 on the Bangkok-Nong Khai route will leave Bangkok Central Station at 21:25 and arrive in Nong Khai at 07:55 on July 20. Passengers will then continue their journey at 08:35, reaching Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) at 09:05.
Passport checks will be conducted at two points: Nong Khai Railway Station and Vientiane Railway Station (Khamsavath).
Ticket prices are as follows:
- 3rd class seat: 281 baht
- 2nd class air-conditioned seat: 574 baht
- 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper: 784 baht (upper berth), 874 baht (lower berth)
Nong Khai province has prepared both personnel and facilities to accommodate tourists and passengers arriving on the inaugural train.

There are also two additional round-trip services between Udon Thani and Vientiane (Khamsavath), totaling four trains per day.

Welcoming Thai Trains to Laos: Vientiane Bus Service Opens Morning Market-Khamsavath and Laos-China Railway Lines

The Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise announced the launch of new bus routes from Morning Market to Khamsavath and from Khamsavath to the Laos-China Railway station to accommodate train passengers from Thailand to the new railway station, starting July 20th.
Today (July 19), it was reported that the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) will begin operating Bus Line 12 from Morning Market (CBS) to Khamsavath Railway Station and from Khamsavath Railway Station to the Laos-China Railway Station starting from July 20, 2024. This service is to accommodate passengers arriving by train from Krungthep Apiwat Central Station and Udon Thani Station in Thailand to Vientiane Station (Khamsavath). Bus service staff will be available at Khamsavath Station, located at the station's exit, identified by the "Bus Service" sign.
The initial fare from Khamsavath Station to Morning Market is 20,000 kip (about 35 baht) per person, and from Khamsavath Station to the Laos-China Railway Station (Vientiane Capital Station) is 30,000 kip (about 50 baht) per person. The bus schedule will be announced later by the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise via the Vientiane City 2 Bus Service Facebook page. Bus locations can be tracked via GPS on the website https://lao.busnavi.asia.
Bus Line 12 from Khamsavath Railway Station to Morning Market will pass through landmarks such as That Luang Market, QUBE Hotel, ITECC Mall, Big C Supercenter, That Luang, Suphatha Hotel, and Patuxay, ending at the Central Bus Station (CBS). The historic train connecting Thailand and Lao PDR had an enthusiastic inaugural trip, with crowds taking photos of the "Krungthep Aphiwat - Vientiane (Khamsavath)" sign as souvenirs.
The "Daily News Transportation Innovation Team" reported that at 9:25 PM on July 19, Rapid Train No. 133, on the route Krungthep Aphiwat - Vientiane (Khamsavath), Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), embarked on its inaugural historic journey connecting Thailand and Lao PDR. The train departed from Krungthep Aphiwat Central Station, carrying 246 passengers who had pre-booked their tickets to their destination in Vientiane.
The schedule included arriving at Nong Khai Station at 7:55 AM on July 20, completing immigration procedures at the Nong Khai Station checkpoint for 40 minutes, departing Nong Khai at 8:35 AM, and arriving at Vientiane (Khamsavath) Station at 9:05 AM.
The atmosphere of the inaugural journey was lively and cheerful as people eagerly pre-booked their tickets since the first booking day on July 10. On the travel day, everyone was excited and took photos with the train and its interior, as well as with the "Krungthep Aphiwat - Vientiane (Khamsavath)" sign, which became a popular photo spot.
Ticket prices for Rapid Train No. 133/134 on the Krungthep Aphiwat - Vientiane (Khamsavath) - Krungthep Aphiwat route are as follows: third class costs 281 baht, second class costs 414 baht, second class air-conditioned costs 574 baht, and second class air-conditioned sleepers are priced at 784 baht for upper berths and 874 baht for lower berths. For Rapid Train No. 147/148 on the Udon Thani - Vientiane (Khamsavath) - Udon Thani route, the fare is 100 baht for a fan-cooled car and 200 baht for an air-conditioned car.
