Japan is not very good producer of Diesel Engines. JR Central has to import Cummins Diesel Engines from UK to improve the performance of Japanese Railcars to be use in non electrified lines.
Even worse, Japanese technology on electrified railways are become more and more inferior compared with foreign rivals ... Japanese Electric railways still stick with GTO-Based Electric Power for Railcars whcih Jpanese Raiwlay producers have mastered ... However GTO technology is now under threatening from IGBT Technology whcih Japanese railcar producers have been fully mastered yet.
The improper restructure by managers of large companies during logn recession have already RUINED the R&D on basic researches within instituted supported by large corporates while universities don't have enough capacity tio replace the the corporated funded institutes ...
The Collapse of Education system in Japan also reder high quality Blue Collar works as somethign in the past ... with the lack of basic knowleddge and skill of general publci to handle such basic R & D. This problem have to be SOLVED or japanse railway business would NOT be able to compete with other countries AGAIN!
