The Chiang Mai University Student Club is preparing to host the annual event to welcome new train students for the year 2024, scheduled for June 1-2. This tradition, now in its 60th year, has evolved from using 3rd class train cars to air-conditioned sleeper cars, yet the core activities, especially alumni greeting students along the route, remain unchanged.
Today (May 19), news reports indicated that the Chiang Mai University Student Club is organizing this event to welcome new students from various provinces and Bangkok. The theme for this year is "Path of Legends to the Naruemit Universe," celebrating the 60th anniversary of this tradition. The journey will utilize air-conditioned sleepers on the second floor, with tickets priced at 999 baht and limited to 270 participants. The event will kick off at Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) at 1:00 p.m., with the train departing at 3:00 p.m.
During the journey, seniors will engage in singing, playing, and dancing activities. Along the way, Chiang Mai University Alumni Clubs from various provinces, including Lopburi, Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, and Lampang, will join in congratulating the new students. The train is scheduled to arrive at Chiang Mai Railway Station at 6:30 a.m., where a shuttle bus will take students to Sala Dhamma at Chiang Mai University for a tree-planting activity to promote carbon neutrality. The event will conclude with seniors escorting the new students to their dormitories in an activity called "The Older Brother Brings the Younger Brother Home."
The first round of seat reservations and payments for new students took place on May 5, 2024, and all seats were fully booked. The second round of reservations will open on May 26, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Participation in the train welcoming event is voluntary, focusing mainly on students from outside the northern region, including Bangkok.
The tradition of welcoming new train students at Chiang Mai University began in 1964, the year the university was founded. At that time, university administrators were concerned about the safety of students traveling from other provinces to study in Chiang Mai. Train travel from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) to Chiang Mai was the most convenient option. To ensure student safety, three teachers were sent to coordinate with the State Railway of Thailand to rent a passenger car for the journey.
In 1968, the Chiang Mai University Student Club volunteered to oversee the welcoming activities, a responsibility they have maintained ever since. Over the years, the event has adapted to use air-conditioned coaches instead of ordinary 3rd class passenger cars, enhancing comfort and safety for the new students. The core activity of alumni congratulating new students along the journey remains a cherished tradition.
