On October 17, 2024, at the Ao Luek meeting room, Krabi Provincial Hall, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), in collaboration with a consulting firm, held a meeting to provide preliminary information and discuss the feasibility study for the Thap Put - Krabi railway construction project. Mr. Sakarin Purinthapibal, Head of Krabi Provincial Office, presided over the meeting. Representatives from SRT and the consulting firm provided information, with heads of government agencies, representatives from public and private sectors, and the general public in attendance.
Mr. Sakarin Purinthapibal stated that the construction of the Thap Put - Krabi railway, if realized, would be a boon for Krabi Province. It would better connect tourism on the southern east coast to the west coast and improve connectivity with Krabi Airport, enhancing potential and competitiveness.
The Thap Put - Krabi railway construction project aims to develop rail transport to connect with the airport, accommodating passengers from the new Surat Thani - Phang Nga - Krabi railway line. This connection will improve network efficiency, enhance economic competitiveness, trade, investment, and tourism potential.
The project starts from Thap Put Station, heading towards Krabi town, with a connection to Krabi Airport. This aligns with the SRT's feasibility study on expanding spur lines to connect major provinces nationwide. The goal is to increase rail transport efficiency, distribute development opportunities, reduce travel time, and save fuel, in line with government policies on logistics development. It also corresponds with the network connectivity plan and enhances SRT's service efficiency, as outlined in the Railway Network Development Master Plan. This plan supports special economic zones, tourism, and area development by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP).
The Thap Put - Krabi railway project will be a new double-track line, mostly parallel to Highway 4 and high-voltage power lines. Starting from Thap Put Station in Phang Nga Province and ending at Krabi Airport Station, the route covers approximately 70 kilometers, with 5 stations and 4 stops. The feasibility study encompasses economic, engineering, and environmental aspects, including public consultations. Initially, three potential routes are being considered, with a study period of 300 days starting from August 2024. The conclusion on whether to proceed with construction is expected around June 2025.
