This video will show a land journey from Singapore back to Thailand by train through Malaysia. It starts from Woodlands Checkpoint in Singapore, crossing over to Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Then, you take the East Coast Line train, train number 26, from JB Sentral station to the final destination at Tumpat station in Kelantan, in northern Malaysia, which borders Thailand at Tak Bai and Sungai Kolok districts. From there, you take a bus from Tumpat to the Rantau Panjang border, which is opposite Sungai Kolok district. Then, you cross the Golok River into Thailand.
KTM Adds Special Express Trains, Cutting Travel Time Between Key Stations: Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar in Under 5 Hours

Malayan Railways (KTMB) in Malaysia has revised the ETS (Electric Train Service) schedule effective from August 1, 2024. The upgrade includes six special ETS Express trains, which will stop only at main stations, reducing travel time from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth, Penang to 3 hours and to Padang Besar to under 5 hours.
Today (June 3), KTMB, Malaysia's state-owned railway company, announced the new ETS schedule effective from August 1, 2024. The revised schedule considers the ongoing Klang Valley Double Tracking project, phase 1 from Rawang to KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur, and the integration of ETS services with other train services at key stations. These include the Komuter Utara from Padang Besar to Butterworth and Ipoh, Ekspres Selatan from JB Sentral to Gemas, and Ekspres Rakyat Timuran from JB Sentral to Tumpat.
The ETS Express services (trains starting with EX) will stop only at main stations, thereby shortening travel times. Travel from KL Sentral to Ipoh will take 2 hours, from KL Sentral to Butterworth will take 3 hours, and from KL Sentral to Padang Besar will take 4 hours and 50 minutes. The new schedule and the introduction of these six special express trains aim to save travel time and encourage public use of safe and convenient rail transport.
Tickets for the period from August 1 to November 30, 2024, went on sale at noon on May 30. Passengers are encouraged to plan and book tickets in advance, especially during public holidays and school vacations, through the KTM Mobile (KITS) app or the KTMB website for quick and easy cashless transactions.
The new ETS Express train services from August 1, 2024, are as follows (all times are in Malaysian time, one hour ahead of Thailand):
**Outbound Trains:**
- EX9104 KL Sentral-Butterworth: Departs 11:40, arrives 15:15. Stops: Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Taiping, Bukit Mertajam, Butterworth.
- EX9004 KL Sentral-Ipoh: Departs 12:00, arrives 14:00. Stops: Kuala Lumpur, Batu Gajah, Ipoh.
- EX9206 KL Sentral-Padang Besar: Departs 18:00, arrives 22:50. Stops: Kuala Lumpur, Sungai Buloh, Ipoh, Taiping, Sungai Petani, Alor Setar, Arau, Padang Besar.
**Inbound Trains:**
- EX9107 Butterworth-KL Sentral: Departs 13:05, arrives 16:40. Stops: Bukit Mertajam, Taiping, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, KL Sentral.
- EX9009 Ipoh-KL Sentral: Departs 15:45, arrives 17:45. Stops: Batu Gajah, Kuala Lumpur, KL Sentral.
- EX9207 Padang Besar-KL Sentral: Departs 13:50, arrives 18:40. Stops: Arau, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Taiping, Ipoh, Sungai Buloh, Kuala Lumpur, KL Sentral.
Padang Besar station, on the Malaysia-Thailand border near Sadao, Songkhla, will see 5 outbound and 5 inbound trains daily, as follows:
- EP9272 KL Sentral-Padang Besar (ETS Business Class): Departs 07:20, arrives 12:41.
- EP9274 KL Sentral-Padang Besar (ETS Business Class): Departs 09:55, arrives 15:16.
- EG9420 Gemas-Padang Besar (ETS Gold): Departs 08:12, arrives 16:18, passing KL Sentral at 10:41.
- EX9206 KL Sentral-Padang Besar (ETS Express): Departs 18:00, arrives 22:50.
- EP9278 KL Sentral-Padang Besar (ETS Business Class): Departs 22:50, arrives 04:11 (next day).
Padang Besar checkpoint operates from 06:00-22:00 Malaysian time (05:00-21:00 Thai time).
Additionally, KTMB opened the new Segamat station, the fifth-largest city in Johor, on May 15, as part of the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double-Tracking Rail Project (Gemas-JB EDTP), expected to complete in 2025. The current ETS schedule up to November 30, 2024, does not include services to Segamat, with ETS trains ending at Gemas. However, KTM Intercity diesel trains still serve Segamat with six daily Ekspres Selatan trains between Gemas and JB Sentral and two daily Ekspres Rakyat Timuran trains between Tumpat and JB Sentral.

ZHUZHOU, 7 June 2024 - YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport together with representatives of the CRRC group unveiled the first ETS 3 train, a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit, during a visit to CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotives Co. Ltd here, yesterday.
Also present were YBhg. Dato' Azhar Ahmad RAC CEO, YBhg. Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin KTMB Group CEO and other delegates from the Ministry of Transport and agencies.
This first train is expected to be delivered to Malaysia in July 2024. Apart from the two (2) sets from Zhuzhou, China, a total of eight (8 trains will be assembled in Malaysia.
These ETS3 trains will be used for the newly electrified and double-tracked Gemas - Johor Bahru sections as well as the entire West Coast rail network from Padang Besar in the north to Johor Bahru in the south.
