FamilyTrip: Visiting Songkhla Railway Station, Closed for Over 46 Years Since July 1978
Today, we took a family trip to the Songkhla Railway Station, which has been out of service for over 46 years since July 1978. Recently, they have placed locomotives, passenger cars (both Bogie Third Class & Van (BTV.) and Bogie Third Class Carriage(BTC.) types), freight cars (both Covered Goods Wagon (C.G.) and Low Sided Wagon (L.S.)), and staff cars in front of the station. Although these vehicles have been on display for about two weeks, today was the first chance I had to take my children to visit. There were many other parents with their children there as well.
These trains were transported from Hat Yai Junction, and most of them are damaged or involved in accidents, likely decommissioned or retired from service. By their appearance, many seem to have been involved in accidents or bombings while still in service in the southern border area of Hat Yai. Some still have their original signage attached.
Unofficially, it is understood that the Songkhla Municipality plans to refurbish all the train cars and display them as historical artifacts, highlighting Songkhlas significance as a major starting point for the southern railway line, similar to Kantang Station.
In recent news, the State Railway of Thailand is preparing to auction off the construction of a double-track railway from Surat Thani-Hat Yai Junction-Songkhla soon. This development will bring train service back to the Songkhla line.
However, the new Songkhla station will not be located at the current site but will be situated in the city center, not far from the original Songkhla station.

The wooden bridge over Saphan Dam Road was the first bridge on the Hat Yai-Songkhla railway line. When traveling by train from Hat Yai Junction Station during the time the Hat Yai-Songkhla train was still running, this area was surrounded by rice fields. This bridge served to drain water between Khlong Hae subdistrict and Hat Yai city.
Later, when the train service was discontinued and houses and communities emerged, a road branching off from Ratthakan Road was built northward, called Saphan Dam Road, passing under this wooden bridge.
Currently, the wooden bridge and railway tracks have been completely removed. The railway tracks were the last to be removed around 2022.

July 22, 2024: Engineers from the contractor company visited the site with a backhoe to level the ground in preparation for laying the remaining tracks as per the contract. The delay was due to the need to specially order rail spikes for wooden sleepers from a factory in Samut Sakhon, an area known for the black chin tilapia outbreak.
This is part of the Songkhla City Municipality's project to restore the railway tracks in front of Songkhla Railway Station, with the aim of displaying a locomotive.
July 23, 2024: Transported an additional 135 logs of takian thong (Hopea odorata) wooden sleepers. Collected concrete sleeper debris and cleared the storage area to prepare for laying new tracks.
On July 24, 2024, during the adjustment of the area on the south side of Songkhla Railway Station, old railway tracks from the reign of King Rama VI were discovered once again.

Today (July 24, 2024), at the Saraphi 1 Meeting Room in the Songkhla City Municipality Office, Mr. Wanchai Parinyasiri, Mayor of Songkhla City, assigned Ms. Yaowalak Kimakhom, Deputy City Clerk (Rong Palat Thetsaban) of Songkhla City Municipality, to chair a meeting to follow up on the railway restoration project at Songkhla Railway Station. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Phuraphon Wanichrak, Director of the Engineering Department, heads of government agencies, and other relevant parties.
The purpose of this meeting was to monitor the progress of the project and ensure that operations proceed smoothly and in line with the objectives. The focus is on conserving and developing the Railway Station Community Learning Center, promoting conservation tourism, and aligning the project with plans to develop Songkhla as a World Heritage City.

July 25, 2024: A trench was dug along the fence line in preparation for planting 150 'Christina' plants. There was also a removal of old railway points, which were piled up beside the track.
