An accident occurred when a train collided with a pickup truck carrying relatives to a funeral, resulting in 5 deaths and 2 injuries.
On July 8, 2024, at 18:10, an accident took place involving the regular train No. 201 Bangkok-Phitsanulok and a mangosteen-colored pickup truck with license plate BM 5669 Phichit. The collision happened at a railway crossing in Moo 1, Pak Thang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phichit Province.
Police investigation revealed that the pickup truck driver was transporting relatives from Ban Tha Mafai, Pa Makhap Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phichit Province, along with snacks for distribution at a relative's funeral at Wat Ratchachang Khwan, Moo 1, Pak Thang Subdistrict. Upon reaching the accident site, an unmarked railway crossing, the train collided with the middle of the pickup truck. The impact scattered the prepared snacks across the area, and the pickup truck fell off to the side of the tracks.
At the scene, three women died instantly, two more died at the hospital, and two others were seriously injured and are currently being treated at Phichit Hospital.
A relative disclosed that the group was heading to a funeral of a family member, which was less than 1 kilometer from the accident site. Being close relatives, they had prepared snacks to distribute to the funeral attendees.
A railway official revealed that this particular crossing had no barriers. Train drivers are required to sound their horns to warn vehicles crossing in this area. It's unclear why the pickup driver proceeded to cross while the train was approaching. Police will continue to investigate to determine the exact cause of the accident.
