Mr. Wittaya Panmongkol, Acting Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), revealed that Mr. Surapong Piyachote, Deputy Minister of Transport, has instructed MRTA to implement the policy of a maximum 20 baht fare for metro rides. This is one of the key "Quick Win" policies of the Ministry of Transport's "Transport for People's Prosperity" initiative, aimed at easing the cost of living for citizens and encouraging greater use of public transportation.
MRTA first implemented this policy on the MRT Purple Line (Chalerm Ratchamongkol Line) from October 16, 2023. In the second phase, starting November 30, 2023, a maximum 20 baht joint fare was introduced for passengers connecting between the MRT Purple Line and the Red Line suburban railway system using a single EMV Contactless card and transferring at Bang Son station within 30 minutes.
From October 16, 2023, to June 30, 2024, the MRT Purple Line saw an average of 64,582 passengers per trip per day, an increase of 6,197 passengers per day compared to the period before the policy implementation (September 16 - October 15, 2023), which averaged 58,385 passengers per trip per day. On Friday, June 28, 2024, the last Friday of the month, passenger numbers reached a record high of 86,639 per trip per day, the highest since the Purple Line opened. The busiest station was Talad Bang Yai, with 9,856 passengers per day.
Mr. Surapong Piyachote has been driving the 20 baht maximum fare policy forward, instructing MRTA and related agencies to develop the area around Khlong Bang Phai station on the Purple Line as a Western Transport Hub. Since June 16, 2024, the station has been serving as a pick-up and drop-off point for buses operated by Transport Co., Ltd. (BorKhorSor), Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), and Smart Bus Co., Ltd. This has resulted in a 7.02% increase in passenger numbers at Khlong Bang Phai station in the latter half of June 2024, averaging 3,992 passengers per day.
MRTA is confident that this Western Transport Hub will encourage more people to use mass rapid transit by providing seamless connections between land and rail public transport systems. Combined with the 20 baht maximum fare policy, this is expected to continue increasing ridership on the Purple Line.
MRTA remains committed to developing the mass rapid transit network and improving connections with other public transport systems. They will continue to innovate and implement new technologies to meet the needs of metro users, aiming to enhance service quality and maximize benefits for the public.
