'Surapong' visits the Thai-Lao and Lao-Chinese railway freight connection points
Matichon Online, July 19, 2024 - 20:47
On July 19, following the conclusion of the Thai-Lao transport cooperation meeting, Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachoti and his delegation visited the Thanalaeng Station and the Vientiane South Station of the Lao-Chinese railway. They inspected the connection points between the Thai-Lao and Lao-Chinese railways, located approximately 2.5 kilometers north of Thanalaeng Station. The transshipment area for goods between the meter gauge (1.000 meters) railways includes two tracks: an outer track 700 meters long and an inner track adjacent to the lifting yard, 350 meters long. The standard gauge (1.435 meters) railway has one track that connects to Vientiane South Station, dedicated to freight transport.
Container cranes are used to transfer containers onto the railcars. On June 1, 2021, the Lao PDR government transferred the building and container yard (CY) of Thanalaeng Station to the Vientiane Logistics Park (VLP). Currently, the Lao PDR is establishing a working group to study the return of Thanalaeng Station to the Lao PDR government, with the Lao Railway Company taking responsibility for its management.
Surapong and his delegation then traveled to Vientiane South Station, a central hub for Lao-Chinese railway freight transport, featuring an electronic customs clearance system managed by the Lao-China Railway Company Limited. Presently, goods are transported between Thailand, Lao PDR, and China through Vientiane South Station. Future cooperation between Thailand and Lao PDR aims to increase rail freight volume, reduce logistics costs, and promote environmental sustainability.

High-Speed Rail from Bangkok to Kunming in 16 Hours by 2029
Source - Daily News
Sunday, July 21, 2024 06:38
The Thai railway network is expanding beyond Vientiane to China. Mr. Surapong Piyachot, Deputy Minister of Transport, revealed that the inaugural international train service between Thailand and Laos from Bangkok to Vientiane (Khamsavath) on July 19 was successful, with about 500 passengers on a train that normally seats 246. Advance bookings are available up to 180 days ahead.
The main issue identified was the immigration process at Nong Khai station. Discussions are underway with Laos to potentially move all immigration checks to Vientiane station for greater convenience.
It's expected that over 200,000 passengers will use this route annually, generating more than 67 million baht in revenue. Laotian tourists are among the top 5 visitors to Thailand, with an estimated 977,000 visitors expected in 2024, generating about 36,960 million baht.
The next phase involves pushing for a high-speed rail line from Thailand to Luang Prabang and Kunming, China. Thailand is currently constructing the first phase of its high-speed rail from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima (250 km) and preparing for the second phase from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai (357 km), set to open by 2029.
According to the master plan of the Department of Rail Transport, by 2029, we should see a Bangkok-Kunming route covering 1,678 km in about 16 hours.
Currently, the train from Bangkok to Vientiane covers 631 km in about 12 hours.

"Transportation" Adopts Laos-China Railway Immigration Model for Thailand-Laos
Daily News, July 21, 2024, 17:05
Transport Innovation: "Surapong" Rides Laos-China Railway to Kunming, Studies Railway Immigration Procedures Between Laos-China for Adaptation to Thailand-Laos Railway, Preparing for Increased Cross-Border Travel
On July 21, Mr. Surapong Piyachot, Deputy Minister of Transport, revealed that from July 21-23, 2024, he and a delegation of Transport Ministry executives are visiting Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China. The purpose is to strengthen relations and cooperation in transportation between Thailand and China, as well as to study railway immigration facilitation procedures between Laos and China for application in Thailand.
The delegation traveled on the Laos-China Railway train D88 from Luang Prabang station, taking about 1 hour to reach Boten Railway Station, located in the Boten Special Economic Zone, Luang Namtha Province, northern Laos. This special economic zone is situated on Route R3A, a key transportation route connecting Laos and China.
Boten Railway Station is part of an important railway line linking Vientiane, Laos, with Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. It is only about 8 kilometers from the Laos-China border, making it a strategic point for goods transportation and passenger travel between the two countries.
Currently, the Laos-China Railway project connects Vientiane Station to Boten Station, covering 414 km, and links with the Chinese railway from Boten Station to Kunming South Station, spanning 1,022 km. The cross-border railway section is constructed as a tunnel, as the border between the two countries lies between Boten Station (Laos) and Mohan Station (China). Therefore, immigration procedures are conducted at both stations.
Mr. Surapong added that this visit to Yunnan Province is a significant opportunity to strengthen relations and cooperation in transportation between Thailand and China. This will lead to more efficient development of infrastructure and transportation system connections between the two countries, especially linking with Thailand through the Laos-China Railway. This will facilitate faster and more efficient goods transportation and travel between Thailand, Laos, and China in the future, benefiting trade, investment, and tourism among these countries.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamraks, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, explained that upon arrival at Boten Station, passengers must disembark with their luggage to pass through Lao PDR's exit immigration at Boten checkpoint. They then re-board the same train with the same seat numbers to pass through the tunnel to Mohan Station (China). There, passengers must disembark again with their luggage to pass through China's entry immigration and luggage scanning before re-boarding the same train with the same seat numbers. The train then continues to various stations in China, including Jinghong (Xishuangbanna), Pu'er, Yuxi, and finally Kunming South Station.
Mr. Pichet added that the delegation studied the railway immigration processes at Boten and Mohan checkpoints, where technology is used to screen passengers, facilitating and increasing the efficiency of immigration checks. This helps make the immigration process faster, more accurate, and safer. The Ministry of Transport will apply these approaches and technologies to develop the railway immigration system between Thailand and Laos to accommodate the expected significant increase in cross-border travel after the full operation of the railway connecting Thailand, Laos, and China.
The delegation then continued by train to Kunming South Railway Station in Kunming, with train D88 (Vientiane-Kunming South route) arriving at Kunming South Station at 18:34.

Vang Vieng is a world-renowned destination, attracting a large number of foreign tourists. In addition to its natural and historical attractions, it is located on the Laos-China Railway, with convenient transportation links and an expressway connection. This year is also the Lao Tourism Year, as designated by the government.
