Thailand Post Ventures into the Changing Logistics Market
Manager Online, July 26, 2023, 2:16 PM
Thailand Post reports first-half revenue of 10,602.30 million baht and a profit of 136.60 million baht in 2023. The company is pushing EMS World for global express delivery, strengthening its international shipping network, and partnering with e-commerce platforms to bring Thai businesses to the global market.
Dr. Danan Suphattraphan, President of Thailand Post Co., Ltd., revealed that Thailand Post's total revenue for the first half of 2023 was 10,602.30 million baht, with a profit of 136.60 million baht. The international business generated 1,293.31 million baht, accounting for 12.20% of total revenue, with the top destination countries being the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Australia.
The main products shipped are clothing, snacks and dried food, health and beauty products, documents, and collectibles. The company expects the international service business to grow by 15%, generating at least 1,800 million baht in revenue in the second half of the year.
The Thai e-commerce market is expected to continue growing, reaching a value of 700,000 million baht by the end of 2023. Thailand Post is positioning itself as a leader in transportation, supporting online and international trade by strengthening its network and services to meet international standards. The company aims to achieve its 2023 revenue target of 22,000 million baht and maximize profits from the total logistics market value of over 100,000 million baht, of which Thailand Post holds a 32% market share.
- Growing on Its Own
"Thailand Post's first-half profit came from cost management. We didn't grow because the market expanded, but because we didn't sit idly by, which improved our potential. The overall logistics market isn't growing much due to the economic situation and the lack of recovery in purchasing power," said Dr. Danan.
- Seizing New Opportunities
To increase revenue opportunities, Thailand Post is offering main services to support international shipping, including:
1. Diverse transportation routes, both air and land.
2. Collaboration with postal services worldwide.
3. Improvement of the international shipping system with partners.
4. Collaboration with eBay and Amazon FBA.
5. Expansion of the international transportation network.
"Thailand Post has a parcel delivery network covering 205 destinations in 193 countries worldwide, including remote areas like the Marshall Islands and Guam, reaching areas that other service providers cannot," said Dr. Danan.
- Interest in Virtual Banking
Regarding the consideration of applying for a license to operate a branchless commercial bank (Virtual Bank), Dr. Danan said that there will be clarity after the matter is presented to the board meeting in August 2023. He admitted that it is interesting, with limited and acceptable risks.
In India, India Post International and India Post Payments Bank allow postal workers to serve 200,000 customers per day, making it possible to recoup investments within 4-5 years.
