On October 19th, Mr. Veeris Ammarapala, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, revealed that on October 18th, at the State Railway of Thailand's meeting room, he welcomed and held discussions with Mr. Daojinda Siharaj, General Manager of the Lao National Railway State Enterprise, and his delegation. The meeting focused on the progress made after the signing of the "Technical Operation Record for Rail Freight Transport" on October 8th, 2024. This agreement aims to expand cross-border rail transport capacity between Thailand and Laos, ensuring smooth operations and cooperation among all four parties involved to achieve seamless rail connectivity.
Mr. Veeris disclosed that both parties have jointly managed international freight trains, aiming to reach the target of 14 round trips per day. This will cater to the growing demand, enhance rail transport efficiency, and maximize the utilization of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. There are also plans to consider increasing the transport capacity further in the future.
Regarding passenger transport, the SRT will add one air-conditioned passenger car with sleeper seats to the Rapid Train 133/134, running on the Bangkok Apiwat Central Station - Vientiane (Khamsavat) - Bangkok Apiwat Central Station route. This addition will accommodate the continuously increasing demand from passengers, which has surpassed 13,000 since the service's launch.
Furthermore, Mr. Veeris mentioned that the SRT will provide decommissioned bogies to the Lao Railway for refurbishment and use in freight transport between Thanaleng Station and Nong Khai Station. This gesture marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the two countries, supporting the development of the rail transport system in the ASEAN region.
"International cooperation is crucial, and the SRT is pleased to support all aspects of operations to accelerate rail transport with all four parties, ensuring seamless connectivity. This will enhance Thailand's rail network capabilities, positioning the country as a central hub for rail transport in ASEAN.
