The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Board of Directors has greenlit the "Cho Thavee-AS" joint venture as the winner of the bidding for the second phase of the double-track railway construction project, Khon Kaen-Nong Khai section, worth 28.6 billion baht. The contract signing and construction are expected to commence immediately within November, with the aim of opening the service to the public in 2027.
Mr. Weeris Ammarapala, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), revealed that the 14th/2024 SRT Board meeting on October 24, 2024, approved the results of the bidding for the second phase of the double-track railway construction project, Khon Kaen-Nong Khai section. The Cho Thavee-AS joint venture, which submitted the lowest bid, was selected as the contractor for the project, valued at 28.6 billion baht, lower than the set median price.
This decision aligns with the Special Projects and Construction Division's report to the SRT Board of Directors, which confirmed that the Cho Thavee-AS joint venture met all the qualifications and conditions stipulated in the bidding documents. The joint venture comprises:

Mr. Weeris further stated that the next step for the SRT is to review the documents. Once completed, they will sign the contract with the Cho Thavee-AS joint venture to proceed with the project immediately. The contract signing is expected to take place in November 2024.
The SRT announced the invitation and sale of bidding documents through the electronic bidding system (E-bidding) for this project on June 21, 2024. Four companies expressed interest and submitted documents:

The Khon Kaen-Nong Khai double-track railway project is a crucial route connecting the Thanon Chira Junction in Khon Kaen province through Udon Thani province and ending at Nong Khai station. It is also part of Thailand's infrastructure development strategy in the first phase of intercity network development (double-track railway development), following the Cabinet's resolution on October 16, 2023.
The project involves constructing a new railway track parallel to the existing one, along with some route adjustments, covering approximately 167 kilometers. It includes 14 stations, 4 stops, 3 cargo yards, and the installation of signaling and telecommunication systems along the entire route. The project is expected to be completed and operational around 2027.
"This route will complete the double-track railway system in the upper northeastern region of Thailand and enhance the potential of rail transport services for both freight and passengers. It will contribute to cost savings in logistics, reduce travel time and fuel consumption, and mitigate environmental pollution. Furthermore, it will improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents at level crossings. This is a significant project that will increase the efficiency of the rail transport system and provide true convenience for the people," said Mr. Weeris.
