Purple Line Progress: Tunneling Under the Chao Phraya River
Ambitious Underground Project Takes Shape
Bangkok's ambitious Purple Line extension continues to advance, with tunneling operations underway on four key contracts. The 23.63 km southern section, stretching from Tao Poon to Rat Burana, involves a complex underground network spanning 14.29 km.
This massive undertaking requires the excavation of twin tunnels, reaching depths of 30-40 meters, and the construction of several underground stations. Seven tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are currently deployed across the project, with Contracts 1 and 2 utilizing three TBMs each, and Contracts 3 and 4 employing two each.
Progress Update:
* Contracts 1 & 2 (Tao Poon - National Library - Phan Fa): Joint venture CKST-PL, comprising Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited (CK) and Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Company (STEC), has already bored nearly 3 km of tunnels.
* Contract 4 (Saphan Phut - Dao Khanong): Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited is preparing to launch its TBMs in December 2024, with tunneling commencing in January 2025 and expected to be completed by January 2026.
* Contract 3 (Phan Fa - Saphan Phut): A joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited and Nawarat Patanakarn Public Company Limited (ITD-NWR MRT) is tackling this challenging section, which includes a crucial river crossing. Tunneling under the Chao Phraya River is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with completion anticipated in September 2026.
Engineering Feat:
Contract 3 presents a unique engineering challenge: boring a 200-meter tunnel beneath the Chao Phraya River. This echoes the groundbreaking achievement of the Blue Line extension, which successfully navigated a similar subterranean passage between Sanam Chai and Itsaraphap stations. The Purple Line tunnel, however, will plunge even deeper, reaching a depth of approximately 20 meters below the riverbed.
This depth is necessary to accommodate the existing urban landscape and avoid disrupting older buildings and communities above. Despite the challenges, engineers expect the river crossing to take approximately 15 days, similar to the time required for tunneling through regular terrain.
Looking Ahead:
As of October 2024, the Purple Line Southern Project is 44.21% complete. With all six contracts progressing steadily, the line is on track to open for service by the end of 2071, providing a much-needed boost to Bangkok's public transportation network and easing congestion in the rapidly growing metropolis.
