Bangkok Governor and MRTA Inspect Traffic Diversions for Orange Line Construction

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the construction of the Orange Line metro project, section Bang Khun Non - Thailand Cultural Centre. He was welcomed by Mr. Kittikorn Tanpao, Deputy Governor (Engineering and Construction) of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and Project Director, who led the inspection of traffic management for the construction.
Mr. Kittikorn stated that traffic diversions began on November 15, 2024, at 10:00 PM, around the first five stations under construction: Bang Khun Non, Siriraj, Democracy Monument, Yommarat, and Pratunam. This initial phase focuses on relocating utilities, including some sidewalks and electrical installations. One lane adjacent to the sidewalk will be closed, except at Siriraj Station, where construction will not affect traffic lanes. Traffic diversions for the remaining stations will begin at the end of November 2024.
The MRTA will closely supervise the work of Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM), the project's concessionaire, and CH. Karnchang Public Company Limited, BEM's contractor.
Mr. Kittikorn emphasized that contractors must implement measures to minimize traffic disruption during construction. These include limiting lane closures, installing clear traffic signs and markers, deploying traffic volunteers at each construction site, coordinating with relevant agencies, especially local police, and providing advance public notices through various channels.
The MRTA also instructed the contractor to adhere to environmental protection measures outlined in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report. These include installing 2-meter high fences around construction sites and implementing strict safety measures in accordance with the Ministry of Transport's safety policy.
The overpasses at Charansanitwong Road and Ratchadevi intersection are scheduled for demolition in early 2025, while the Pratunam intersection overpass will be demolished in early 2026. The Orange Line project will provide advance public notice of these demolitions.
The public is encouraged to plan their travel routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
The western section of the Orange Line, from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Centre, spans 13.4 kilometers with 11 underground stations. As of the end of October 2024, the overall civil works progress is at 1.90%, which is on schedule.

Ratchathewi intersection bridge to be first starting next year
Mr. Thawatchai Napasakdisri, Director of the Public Works Department, announced the progress of the plan to dismantle and renovate 3 bridges in Bangkok. This is to make way for the construction of the Orange Line MRT stations between Bang Khun Non and the Thailand Cultural Centre.
According to the Orange Line construction documents, the Ratchathewi intersection bridge (Ratchathewi Station) will be dismantled and its structure adjusted to prepare the area for the Ratchathewi Station and the tunnel line. Partial road closures and traffic diversions will be in place during the construction period.
The dismantling will begin on January 15th, 2025 and continue until April 22nd, 2025. The plan is to rebuild the bridge between August 1st, 2026 and February 3rd, 2027. During this time, the bridge will be closed in phases, with traffic management ensuring no less than 4 lanes (round trip) remain open.
For the Pratunam intersection bridge (Pratunam Station), adjustments involve phased dismantling and traffic management to accommodate the station and tunnel construction. This includes diverting traffic around the area. Dismantling will commence on March 1st, 2026 and continue until April 23rd, 2026. The plan is to rebuild the bridge between April 24th and November 9th, 2026. Traffic diversions and partial road closures will be implemented.
The Charansanitwong intersection bridge (Bang Khun Non Station) will be dismantled and its structure adjusted to allow for the construction of the station and the extension of the railway network. Dismantling is scheduled to begin on January 30th, 2025. Traffic will be diverted in phases until June 12th, 2025. The bridge will be rebuilt between March and August 2027, with traffic diversions and partial lane closures in place.
After November 15th, 2024, partial road closures will begin to facilitate the relocation of utilities, traffic management testing, and site preparation for construction. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has coordinated with the Metropolitan Police Bureau to finalize traffic management plans.
