## Ratchathewi Intersection Overpass Closed for Orange Line Construction (Jan 2025)
**Orange Line Project: Bang Khun Non - Thailand Cultural Centre Section**
The construction contractor has closed the Ratchathewi intersection overpass since 10:00 PM on Friday, January 17, 2025. The closure will remain in effect until April 30, 2028.
During this period, traffic will be diverted to the ground level of Phetchaburi Road, with 2 lanes open in each direction.
To mitigate traffic congestion, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has announced alternative routes to avoid the construction area:
**1. Si Rat Expressway, Yomaraj Toll Plaza:**
* For those traveling from Nakhon Sawan Road towards the east side of Bangkok:
* Turn right at Nang Loeng Intersection onto Phitsanulok Road.
* Turn left at Yomaraj Intersection to access the Si Rat Expressway, Yomaraj Toll Plaza.
* Exit onto Rama 9 Road and turn right onto Phetcha Uthit Road.
* Turn left onto Phetchaburi Road to continue towards the east side of Bangkok.
**2. Sri Ayutthaya Road:**
* For those traveling from Nakhon Sawan Road towards the east side of Bangkok:
* Turn right at Nang Loeng Intersection onto Phitsanulok Road.
* Turn left at Urupong Intersection onto Rama VI Road.
* Turn right at Sri Ayutthaya Intersection onto Sri Ayutthaya Road, continuing onto Chaturathit Road and Rama 9 Road.
* Turn right at Rama 9 - Pradit Manutham Intersection to continue towards the east side of Bangkok.
**3. Ratchadamnoen Nok Road:**
* For those traveling from Ratchadamnoen Nok Road:
* Turn right in front of the Royal Plaza onto Sri Ayutthaya Road.
* Turn left at Wat Benchamabophit Intersection onto Rama V Road.
* Turn right at Ratchawithi Intersection onto Ratchawithi Road, passing Victory Monument and continuing onto Din Daeng Road and Rama 9 Road.
* Turn right at Rama 9 - Pradit Manutham Intersection to continue towards the east side of Bangkok.
The contractor expects the Ratchathewi overpass to reopen in April 2028.
The public is advised to avoid the area if possible. The MRTA apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

Mr. Thawatchai Napasakdisri, Director of the Public Works Department (PWD) of Bangkok, revealed that the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has requested permission to demolish three overpasses to facilitate the construction of the Orange Line. These include the overpasses at the intersection of Sutthavas Road and Charansanitwong Road, Ratchawithi intersection, and Pratunam intersection. The PWD is currently reviewing the plans, mitigation measures, and traffic management suitability during the construction phase. The MRTA must ensure minimal disruption to the public, complying with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report and closely managing the construction areas.
Mr. Prapas Lueangsirinapha, Director of the Environment Department of Bangkok, addressed the plan to relocate large trees along the Orange Line route. The MRTA has sought permission from district offices and responsible agencies, including Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Ratchathewi, Bangkok Noi districts, and the Environment Department, for tree relocation and utility removal at designated station construction sites between Taling Chan and the Thailand Cultural Centre. The public will be informed in advance of the relocation process.

The relocation will adhere to arboricultural principles, with experienced arborists overseeing every step, from pruning and preparation for excavation to transportation, soil ball preparation, wrapping, and appropriate handling based on tree size to ensure survival rates.
Key practices for the MRTA regarding relocated trees include:
* Providing care and watering until the trees are established for at least one year.
* Compiling a list with photographs of the relocated trees and their rehabilitation or planting locations.
* Once the arborists have planted or relocated the trees, the MRTA should consider station designs that avoid further relocation of old and historically valuable trees.
* If relocation is unavoidable, certified arborists must conduct assessments.
