The transition from individual transport tickets to a unified ticketing system is underway, with MP Chanin Rungthanakiat expressing confidence in its success under the Pheu Thai government. He emphasized that the "20 Baht Flat Fare" policy would help alleviate traffic congestion, reduce PM2.5 pollution, and ensure equitable access to public transportation.
On January 29, 2025, Chanin Rungthanakiat, a party-list MP and Deputy Spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, discussed the draft Bill on Unified Ticketing System Management. He highlighted that the unified ticketing system would integrate fare payments across public transport modes, including electric trains, subways, expressways, buses, boats, and private feeder services like vans, songthaews, and motorcycle taxis. Commuters would be able to pay for all these services with a single card, making travel more convenient while consolidating travel data into a central system. This initiative aims to eliminate redundant entry fees and implement the "20 Baht Flat Fare" policy, which, despite opposition claims of infeasibility, the Pheu Thai government is determined to prove achievable.
Chanin explained that Pheu Thai aims to increase ridership in the electric rail system, ensuring it becomes a truly accessible public service. This will be achieved through various policies, including the unified ticketing system, the 20 Baht fare cap per trip, and the "Housing for Thais" initiative to promote residential development around transit stations. These measures not only help balance the budget required to subsidize fares but also encourage land development near stations, reduce private vehicle use, alleviate traffic congestion, and mitigate PM2.5 pollution sustainably. Most importantly, they will ease the financial burden on low-income citizens, allowing them to save more and improve their quality of life more quickly.
"The idea of a unified ticketing systemsomething many people once hoped for with the 'Mangmoom Card'has been discussed for years in Thai society but never realized. The proposal of the Unified Ticketing Bill will be a crucial mechanism to successfully transition from separate ticketing systems to a truly integrated fare system under the Pheu Thai government," Chanin stated.
