7HD News Focus - This issue needs to be addressed by the State Railway of Thailand. They need to take serious action against drivers who violate railway crossing barriers. Not only is it disrespectful to traffic laws, but it's also life-threatening.
We feel for the railway staff. Even when they manually pull the barriers closed, some vehicles stubbornly drive through, unafraid of the danger! A TikTok user posted a clip showing staff at Asoke Railway Station pulling the barriers closed to prevent vehicles from crossing the tracks as a train was approaching. However, both cars and motorcycles disregarded the barriers and the staff, making their job difficult.
The 7HD news team visited Asoke Railway Station and witnessed a similar situation as in the clip, with a train arriving and departing from the platform.
Station staff confirmed that this crossing is busy all day. Every time a train is about to arrive, some vehicles speed up or disregard the barriers to avoid waiting for the signal.
They admitted feeling disheartened by the drivers' behavior. When they try to warn or stop them, they are often met with verbal abuse. The staff are also at risk of being hit by vehicles. Worse yet, some vehicles crash into the barriers, causing damage every month.
The clip that was shared online showed an incident from last week when the barrier was broken. The staff had to use a temporary barrier with wheels. The regular barrier has now been repaired.
The 7 HD news team continues to pursue the story of undisciplined drivers who repeatedly damage railway barriers at the Ratchadaphisek Road intersection towards Asoke Montri Road, turning the area into a graveyard of broken barriers.
The damaged railway crossing barriers, discarded by the Makasan Station railway tracks, are a testament to the reckless driving habits in the area. At the Ratchadaphisek Road intersection towards Asoke Montri Road, staff are forced to use metal barriers for safety, but drivers continue to ignore and break through them.
The site has become known as a "graveyard of railway barriers," with numerous broken barriers piled up, some twisted and deformed. Nearby, wrapped barriers, likely spare parts for replacement, are stored.
The 7 HD news team monitored the situation at both the Asoke and Ratchaprarop railway stations and witnessed the same reckless behavior from motorcyclists.
Motorists who fail to comply with traffic laws are in violation of the 1979 Traffic Act, Article 62. When a train warning signal is activated, drivers must slow down and stop at least 5 meters away from the railway crossing. Failure to do so is punishable by a fine not exceeding 500 baht. In the event of an accident resulting in serious injury or death, the penalty can be up to 10 years in prison and a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht, or both.
It is also important to note that if an accident occurs and the driver survives, the State Railway of Thailand may file a lawsuit to claim compensation for the damage caused to the train and railway tracks.
