The Ministry of Transport is moving forward with a proposal to the Cabinet this month for the construction of two Red Line suburban train extensions, with a total budget of over 20 billion baht. The goal is to expand the rail network into the heart of Bangkok.
The Red Line suburban train extension is another project carried over from 2024 that the Ministry of Transport is expediting. However, it was not possible to submit it to the Cabinet meeting in time last year. This will now become a flagship project for 2025, with plans to push for Cabinet consideration as the first project this January.
"Suriya Jungrungreangkit," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, revealed that the ministry is currently accelerating the approval of new projects. This includes the Red Line electric train extension from Rangsit to Thammasat University, which has already been presented to the Cabinet for consideration. It is currently awaiting inclusion on the meeting agenda and is expected to be considered this January.
For the Siriraj - Taling Chan - Salaya extension, it is currently undergoing a review process by relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Finance, the Bureau of the Budget, and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). This feedback will be included in the proposal for Cabinet approval. The Ministry is confident that both projects will be considered by the Cabinet soon to expand the rail transport network, a key government policy.
The Red Line suburban train extension project aligns with the Mass Rapid Transit Master Plan in Bangkok and its vicinity (contiguous areas), Phase 2 (M-MAP2), under Group A1 (ready for immediate implementation). It is divided into:
