Through Draft Regional Regulation, Riau DPRD Encourages Acceleration of Railway Line Development

PEKANBARU (CAKAPLAH) - The condition of the Riau Province road is often damaged even though it continues to be built. As another alternative, the Riau DPRD is seeking a railway policy so that other impacts of road damage can be overcome.

"Roads are always built, but they don't last long. In fact, in general, the quality of the roads has been adjusted to class C," said the Head of the Special Committee (Pansus) for the Draft Regional Regulation (Ranperda) for the Implementation of Transportation of the Riau DPRD Manahara Napitupulu, Tuesday (18/2/2025).

Manahara explained that in the Draft Regional Regulation, policies related to railways were included. He emphasized that the planning for the construction of railway lines in Riau was actually included in the regional Long-Term Development Plan (RPJP).

"By re-incorporating it into this Draft Regional Regulation, the region has a reference to encourage the central government to immediately realize the construction of railways in Riau, especially for freight transportation," he said.

According to him, because railways are the authority of the central government, the regions need to actively fight for the project to be realized soon.

"Data shows that coal reserves in Riau will last for more than 50 years. A wise step is to include railways in the Draft Regional Regulation so that it can become the basis for future policies," explained Manahara.

In addition, he added, this Draft Regional Regulation will also regulate solutions related to the Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL) problem, which has been the main cause of road damage in Riau.**
