หาดใหญ่-สงขลา 2551 : ครบรอบ 30 ปีการยุบเลิกการเดินรถไฟ

สงขลา หาดใหญ่ สมัยก่อนมีต้นเสม็ดมาก เห็นได้จากที่ตั้งสถานีรถไฟชุมทางหาดใหญ่ เรียกว่าบ้านโคกเสม็ดชุน และชื่อเก่าของวัดชัยมงคล หน้าสถานีรถไฟสงขลา คือ วัดโคกเสม็ด

ภาพถ่ายเก่าสะพานน้ำน้อยระหว่างก่อสร้าง โดยอาจารย์คูร์ท บายเยอร์ วิศวกรเยอรมันที่มาคุมงานก่อสร้างตำหนักเขาน้อย ทางห้องสมุดภาพถ่ายเยอรมันก็ใส่คำบรรยายภาพว่า โครงการทางรถไฟที่บ้านดารา จ.อุตรดิตถ์ ซึ่งดูแล้วไม่ใช่แน่ เพราะเจอต้นเสม็ดชุนอยู่ด้านขวาของภาพด้วย

เมื่อขยายภาพดู เห็นอักษรจีนกำกับไว้ที่โครงสะพานด้วย คือคำว่า 左边 แปลว่า ด้านซ้าย กับคำว่า 右边 แปลว่า ด้านขวา แสดงว่าใช้คนงานชาวจีน (กุลี) แน่นอน เขียนไว้ไม่ให้ประกอบสะพานผิดด้าน

การก่อสร้างทางรถไฟ ทำให้เกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยเฉพาะสัตว์ป่า ปศุสัตว์ พืชพรรณ บริเวณทางรถไฟ วิชาที่ศึกษาเรื่องนี้คือ นิเวศวิทยาทางรถไฟ (Railway Ecology)

ภาพถ่ายเก่าของขบวนรถจักรไอน้ำที่สถานีรถไฟสงขลานี้พบมีการตีพิมพ์เผยแพร่เป็นครั้งแรกใน สารานุกรมวัฒนธรรมภาคใต้ พ.ศ. 2529 ซึ่งจัดทำโดย สถาบันทักษิณคดีศึกษา มศว สงขลา ภาพดังกล่าวเป็นหลักฐานสำคัญที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงประวัติศาสตร์ของการคมนาคมทางรางในภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย

ต่อมา เพจ โรงเรียนวิศวกรรมรถไฟ ได้ค้นพบว่าต้นฉบับของภาพนี้ถูกเก็บรักษาอยู่ที่ สำนักหอจดหมายเหตุแห่งชาติ และได้นำมาเผยแพร่ให้ประชาชนได้รับชมอีกครั้ง โดยไฟล์ภาพที่นำมาเผยแพร่ใหม่นี้มีความคมชัดกว่าภาพที่ปรากฏในสารานุกรมเดิม

Later, the Railway Engineering School Facebook page discovered that the original copy of this photograph was preserved at the National Archives of Thailand. They then re-released it to the public in a higher-resolution version, which is clearer than the image originally printed in the encyclopedia.
