SRT Celebrates 128th Anniversary with Steam Locomotive Excursion

Bangkok, March 26 The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has launched a special steam locomotive journey along the historic BangkokAyutthaya route in celebration of its 128th anniversary.
Mr. Chayatham Phromsorn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, presided over the ceremony marking the launch of the special excursion train, Steam Locomotive No. 901. This Pacific-type steam engine, dating back to the post-World War II era, retraces the historic route from Bangkok to Ayutthaya and back. Also in attendance was Mr. Veerish Amrapal, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand. The event offers the public and tourists a chance to be part of a journey steeped in history and to pay tribute to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who laid the foundations for Thailands railway system.
Todays steam locomotive excursion was extremely popular, attracting both Thai and international tourists. Every seat was fully booked as travelers eagerly sought to experience the historic route. The atmosphere aboard the train was lively and joyful. Notably, this special train operates only seven days a year, reserved exclusively for significant occasions.

Each year on May 4, Thailand celebrates Coronation Day, commemorating the royal coronation of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of the Chakri Dynasty. In honor of this significant day, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is operating a special heritage steam train trip on the historic route: Bangkok Nakhon Pathom Bangkok. This is a unique opportunity to honor the King and experience the charm of Nakhon Pathom.
Relive the Past: Ride a Steam Train to Nakhon Pathom
The SRT warmly invites the public to join this special event and enjoy a classic travel experience aboard Pacific steam locomotives No. 824 and 850, post-WWII models manufactured by Nippon Sharyo Co., Ltd. These locomotives are preserved and maintained at the Thonburi Locomotive Depot and are only operated on seven special occasions per year.
The train will depart from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) at 08:10 AM and arrive at Nakhon Pathom Station at 10:10 AM. Passengers will have over six hours to explore, including opportunities to make merit, visit the Phra Pathom Chedi, pay respects to the Phra Ruang Rojanarit Buddha image, tour popular local attractions, wander the old city market, and taste the famous local cuisine.
The return trip departs Nakhon Pathom at 4:30 PM, arriving back in Bangkok at 6:30 PM. The train will stop for passenger boarding and drop-off at Samsen, Bang Sue Junction, Bang Bamru, and Salaya Stations, both outbound and inbound.
Ticket Reservations
Tickets can be reserved nationwide starting April 8, 2025, at 8:30 AM, via the online D-Ticket system or at any railway station across the country.
Fares for the Special Steam Train Service
- 3rd class (standard fan-cooled seats) round trip: 329 THB (adult/child)
- Air-conditioned coach (OTOP car) and air-conditioned sleeper (JR-WEST) round trip: 799 THB per person
Includes light snacks and beverages on board for both outbound and return journeys.
In addition to this historic steam train service, SRT also offers special tourist trains such as KIHA 183 and SRT Royal Blossom, with a variety of travel experiences throughout 2025, including both day trips and overnight journeys.
