"Rail Department" Pushes Economic Rail Line, Unlocking 'Single Customs' from Thailand to Europe

The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) is actively promoting the "Global Economic Rail Line" running from Singapore to Kunming, which connects Asia and Europe. If a "Single Customs" system can be implemented, transport time could be reduced to just 11 days.
The SingaporeKunming railway line, which runs through Thailand as a central hub, is poised to become a vital global "economic railway" due to its strategic position linking Asia and Europe. It provides a fast, cost-effective transportation network that supports international trade and logistics.
Mr. Pichet Kunathammarak, Director-General of the DRT, revealed after a field study of the SingaporeKunming rail corridorconducted in cooperation with New Land Sea Corridor Operation (NLS), a company formed through public-private partnerships under the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiativethat this route presents new opportunities for Thai businesses to expand into international markets, especially China and Europe.
The route spans from Singapore, through Malaysia, Laem Chabang/Mab Ta Phut ports in Thailand, then Nong Khai, Vientiane, Boten, Mohan, Kunming, Chongqing, Xinjiang, Yining, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, and into Europe.
Currently, trial shipments from Thailand to Europe via this railway have been conducted. A shipment of chemical products from Mab Ta Phut to Hamburg, Germany took about 30 days on the first trial and was reduced to 22 days on the second. Several countries are now collaborating to develop a unified customs process to streamline border checks and reduce delays.
We want entrepreneurs to know that global rail connectivity is now a reality, Mr. Pichet said. The SingaporeKunming railway is a key trade and logistics route. Once goods reach China, they can link to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and reach many European countries. This mode of transport is faster than by road and more cost-effective than shipping by sea.
However, he acknowledged that rail transport along this route still takes significant time due to customs procedures and the need to switch trains at borders because different countries use varying rail systems. Collaborative efforts are underway to resolve these limitations and reduce transport time.
One actionable solution is streamlining customs documentation through electronic systems. A unified platform or "Single Window" approach is being discussed, enabling customs documents to be submitted and verified online, significantly simplifying and speeding up the process.
If these issues are resolved, rail transport times from Thailand to Europe could be cut by halffrom an average of 22 days down to just 11. This would make it one of the fastest and most cost-effective international transport routes compared to sea freight, which, while cheaper, currently takes over a month to reach Europe.
The DRT sees clear advantages for Thailand due to its central geographical location along this railway. Thai exporters stand to benefit from greater access to international marketsparticularly for perishable goods such as durian, mangosteen, rambutan, and mangoes, which are of higher quality than those grown in China or Vietnam. These fruits can be exported via rail with preserved quality and lower costs.
The opening of the LaosChina railway in 2021 has already transformed goods transport between Thailand and China. Rail cargo between Thailand and Laos surged from just 2,288 tons in 2021 to 46,287 tons in 2023, and then to 63,676 tons in 2024an impressive 37.56% increase from the previous year, and a substantial rise from 2021.
Furthermore, the expected completion of the ThaiChina high-speed rail in 2029 will mark another major milestone. Once operational, it will reduce the travel time for shipments from Thailand to Chongqing to around four days, boosting Thailands competitiveness and establishing it as a key trade gateway in ASEAN.

Regarding safety, on April 15, 2025, there were two incidents affecting train operations:
(1) At 07:47, a car collision occurred near the level crossing barrier (K.1) at kilometer marker 15/9 between Hua Mak and Ban Thap Chang stations (Srinagarindra Road crossing). The vehicles were damaged, unable to move, and obstructed the track. Officials coordinated with a tow truck from Prawet Police Station to remove the vehicles. This caused Ordinary Train No. 283 (Bangkok - Chuk Samet) an additional delay of 26 minutes.
(2) At 12:42, Special Express Train No. 21 (Krung Thep Aphiwat - Ubon Ratchathani) hit and killed one cow near kilometer marker 457/11 between Si Khoraphum and Ban Kalan stations. This did not obstruct train operations.
For the cumulative 5-day period from April 11-15, 2025, a total of 5,653,260 people used the rail system. This comprised 411,931 passenger trips on SRT intercity trains and 5,241,329 passenger trips on electric trains in the Bangkok metropolitan area and suburbs. It was noted that rail system operators provided sufficient transport capacity, and no passengers were left stranded.
Additionally, the DRT coordinated with various rail service providers to strictly enforce and emphasize the implementation of the facilitation and safety plan for travel during the Songkran Festival 2025, as previously coordinated by the DRT. This included conducting alcohol level tests on 799 operational staff before duty, with no personnel found to have alcohol levels above zero. Staff were assigned to inspect train/electric train routes, and additional personnel were deployed to ensure safety on trains/electric trains and within station areas. Coordination with provinces was undertaken to assign officials/volunteers to illegal level crossings, working with SRT staff. Public relations efforts requested cooperation from road users to comply with traffic laws, stopping vehicles at least 5 meters before level crossings, proceeding only when safe, and not violating signals or barriers at level crossings.
For today (April 16, 2025), the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has added carriages to trains experiencing high passenger density and arranged 8 special assistance trains. These include 2 outbound trains (Train 961 Krung Thep Aphiwat-Sila At, Train 973 Krung Thep Aphiwat-Nakhon Ratchasima) and 6 inbound trains (Train 6 Chiang Mai-Krung Thep Aphiwat, Train 962 Sila At-Krung Thep Aphiwat, Train 934 Ubon Ratchathani-Krung Thep Aphiwat, Train 936 Udon Thani-Krung Thep Aphiwat, Train 984 Yala-Krung Thep Aphiwat, Train 974 Nakhon Ratchasima-Krung Thep Aphiwat) to facilitate public travel and prepare for return journeys.
For the electric train system in the Bangkok metropolitan area and suburbs, operators have been instructed to increase service frequency during peak travel times. Furthermore, the Mahanakhon Pink Line resumed full normal service across all 30 stations from 06:00 on April 16, 2025, onwards to facilitate public travel.
