## Deputy PM Suriya Pushes for Dual-Track Railway Phase 2, Valued at Over 290 Billion Baht
**Bangkok, June 23** Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, is accelerating the Dual-Track Railway Phase 2 project, encompassing six routes spanning 1,249 kilometers with a total value exceeding 290 billion baht. He's urging the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) to expedite approval and prioritize the projects. Three key routes are slated for immediate construction, emphasizing the aim to elevate rail transport and transform Thai logistics into an ASEAN hub.
Suriya Jungrungreangkit revealed updates on the construction of the six dual-track railway lines in Phase 2, totaling 1,249 kilometers and valued at approximately 297,924 million baht. He stated that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has submitted the project to the NESDC for approval, emphasizing its crucial role in enhancing the country's transportation and logistics competitiveness. This initiative aims to genuinely establish Thailand as a central hub for transportation systems in Southeast Asia (ASEAN).
Following recommendations from the NESDC, the SRT has prioritized the projects based on five main factors: passenger transport demand, freight transport demand, track capacity, economics and finance, and strategy and policy. Additionally, 11 secondary factors were considered, including projected passenger numbers, current passenger statistics, projected freight volumes, domestic and international network connectivity, and project readiness.
Suriya further elaborated that the SRT has categorized the six dual-track railway Phase 2 projects into three groups:
* **Group 1: Top Priority (3 routes)**
* Surat Thani - Hat Yai - Songkhla: 321 km, 66,270 million baht
* Pak Nam Pho - Den Chai: 218 km, approximately 81,143 million baht
* Chumphon - Surat Thani: 168 km, approximately 30,422 million baht
* **Group 2: Medium Priority (2 routes)**
* Jira Road Junction - Ubon Ratchathani: 308 km, approximately 44,095 million baht
* Den Chai - Chiang Mai: 189 km, approximately 68,222 million baht
* **Group 3: Lowest Priority (1 route)**
* Hat Yai - Padang Besar: 45 km, approximately 7,772 million baht
Furthermore, in response to the NESDC's observations, the SRT has updated data and assumptions used for forecasting passenger and freight volumes, as well as refining the train operation plan and track capacity analysis. The SRT has also submitted the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for all projects, detailing investment items based on track structure design, station works, at-grade railway-road crossings, and facilities. Regarding the utilization of large railway stations and container yards, the SRT has clarified its revenue enhancement and clear business plans. Concurrently, the SRT has reviewed and updated its plans for resolving at-grade railway-road crossing issues for each project to ensure efficient problem-solving. An analysis of the project's impact on the SRT's financial status, both with and without the dual-track railway Phase 2 construction, aligned with the project prioritization, has also been conducted.
Suriya added that the primary goal of the Dual-Track Railway Phase 2 is to shift freight transport from road to rail. This initiative is also expected to reduce travel times by up to 30% by eliminating the need for trains to wait for opposing traffic, leading to more punctual services. Additionally, it aims to reduce accidents, lower national logistics costs, and provide more convenient, faster, safer, and reasonably priced travel options for the public. Ultimately, the project seeks to modernize and enhance Thailand's transportation infrastructure, driving sustainable economic growth.

Korat: SRT Explains High-Speed Rail Won't Be Ready for Horticultural Expo, Double-Track Budget Increased by Over 8 Billion Baht, Completed in 2031

Korat: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has clarified that the high-speed rail project will not be completed in time for the Horticultural Expo. The double-track rail project has seen its budget increase by over 8 billion baht and is expected to be finished in 2031.
On June 24th, at the Luang Por Koon Parisuttho meeting room on the 3rd floor of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Hall, Mr. Suraphan Silpasuwan, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, chaired a meeting with the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Land Traffic Management Subcommittee (OrJorNor.NorMor.) for the 3rd time in 2025. Dr. Wannarat Channukul, Mayor of Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality, along with Mr. Surawut Cherdchai, former Mayor of Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality and a board member of the SRT Electric Rail Company Limited, and representatives from relevant public and private agencies, as well as the public, were all in attendance.
Under agenda item 3, "Ongoing Matters (Project Implementation in Nakhon Ratchasima Province)," the SRT representative provided an update on the progress of the high-speed rail development project to connect regions, Phase 1: Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima, a distance of 251 kilometers. The overall project's accumulated progress is 44.66%, which is 16.03% behind schedule. For Contract 3-5, Khok Kruat-Nakhon Ratchasima, a distance of 12.38 km, the progress is 13.012%, an increase of 0.49%. This is due to a request to amend the construction design from an at-grade embankment to an elevated structure, following alternative 4 for the Khok Kruat-Phu Khao Lad section, which will be elevated for 7.85 kilometers. The construction period has been extended by 350 days. The latest resolution approved an increase in the construction budget by 2,052 million baht. The report is currently under consideration by the committee overseeing the development of the Thai-Chinese railway cooperation project and the Cabinet. The civil works are scheduled to be completed by March 2026, with full operation expected around 2029.
Regarding the progress of the double-track railway project between Map Kabao-Jira Junction, passing through Nakhon Ratchasima city, the latest status is that the consultant has submitted detailed design adjustments for the SRT to review and discuss with relevant agencies. Following this, project approval and environmental impact assessment will be sought, which will require an additional budget of over 8 billion baht. The principle is to elevate the tracks from Khok Kruat Station to Jira Junction, with crossings over Chaiyanarong Road and Benjarong Road at a height of over 5 meters, before descending before the Hua Thale high bridge.
In the case of the Nakhon Ratchasima OrJorNor.NorMor. meeting 1/2025, a resolution was passed to request the SRT to consider providing special train services to facilitate and transport tourists and the public to the "Nakhon Ratchasima International Horticultural Expo 2029" in Khong District, as the project will not be completed in time. The proposal is currently being presented to the SRT board for consideration. Initially, air-conditioned diesel railcars are expected to be used for the Bangkok-Bua Yai Junction route, a distance of approximately 365 kilometers, with one round trip per day, taking about 4-5 hours per journey.
During the meeting, Mr. Suraphan Chanprapha and others, as owners of private land properties along Jomsurangyat Road near the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) Korat intersection, submitted a letter to Mr. Suraphan, the Deputy Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima. The letter addressed the issue that most of the land in that area had been surveyed for expropriation and compensated by the SRT for the Phase 1 Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail project. However, several remaining plots, totaling over 300 square wa (approximately 1,200 square meters), are outside the expropriated zone and can no longer be used for residential or business purposes. As a result, these properties are currently vacant buildings and empty plots. They requested the SRT to consider purchasing these remaining plots for environmental and aesthetic development of the city, as well as to help alleviate traffic congestion. The Nakhon Ratchasima OrJorNor.NorMor. resolution approved taking appropriate action on this matter.
