CHIANG RAI Cambodian workers in Chiang Rai are ignoring Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's call to return home. They continue to work on the Den Chai-Chiang Rai-Chiang Khong railway construction project.
The situation arose after Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, urged Cambodian workers to return to their country following a land dispute with Thailand, which has escalated to the point of filing a case with the International Court of Justice. In response, Thailand's First and Second Army Regions implemented measures to restrict border checkpoints connecting with Cambodia.
As of today (June 18), Cambodian workers in Chiang Rai continue to remain at their jobs and have not returned to Cambodia as requested.
Recently, officials from the Chiang Rai Provincial Employment Office, along with Mr. Jakkarawut Choommongkol, Assistant Provincial Defense Officer of Chiang Rai, and the Chiang Rai Immigration Checkpoint (TM), inspected businesses employing Cambodian workers. A major location was found to be a private construction contractor in Moo 5, Chom Sawan Subdistrict, Mae Chan District, which had permission to bring in 22 Cambodian workers.
During the inspection, all Cambodian workers were found to be working on the Den Chai-Chiang Rai-Chiang Khong railway construction in Wiang Chiang Rung District, Chiang Rai Province, and had not returned to their home country. Officials advised the private contractor on renewing foreign worker permits electronically for convenience and speed, as well as on reporting worker accommodations, location changes, or new employers to prevent workers from going missing.
Mr. Jakkarawut stated that no irregularities were found during the inspection. There are only about 50 registered Cambodian workers in the area, all of whom are properly documented. However, he urged the public to report any suspicious activity to local administrative officials, sub-district chiefs (Kamnan), and village headmen (Phuyai Ban). Any illegal workers found will be dealt with immediately according to procedure.
