Reporter Ye Chuanzeng
People's Daily (May 24, 2025, Page 04)
640 meters underground, at the No. 2 vertical shaft work area of Gaoligongshan Tunnel on the Dali-Ruili Railway of China Railway Tunnel Bureau Group Co., Ltd., the reporter met Zhou Kunpeng, the work area manager. At this time, he was discussing the construction plan with technicians and workers at a working surface. Hundreds of mechanical equipment roared in the narrow cave, and the hot and humid air in the tunnel covered his glasses with a layer of white mist.
The road to Zhou Kunpeng is not easy to walk.
First, take an elevator shaped like an iron can cage to go down the well from the ground. As the "iron can cage" descends, waves of heat hit your face and huge noises echo in your ears. Five minutes later, the "iron can cage" arrived at the underground construction platform. The route to the work surface is formed by accumulated water and silt. It is more like a "swamp" than a "road". It takes a lot of effort to pull out the rubber shoes that are stuck in it. The reporter was sweating profusely after walking for less than 1 kilometer.
Since coming to Yunnan to build railways in 2013, Zhou Kunpeng has long been accustomed to such roads. "Yunnan has a complex geological structure and there are many difficulties in digging tunnels. For example, the Gaoligong Mountain Tunnel is known as one of the "most difficult railway tunnels to build" in the industry." Zhou Kunpeng paused, "However, the more difficult it is, the more we must move forward."
Zhou Kunpeng is from Henan. He came to China Railway Tunnel Bureau just after graduation in 2009 and devoted himself to railway construction. In June 2013, he was sent to Wenshan, Yunnan, to participate in the construction of Funing Tunnel.
At first, when he heard that he was going to work in Yunnan, Zhou Kunpeng was a little excited: "The Funing Tunnel passes through many famous scenic spots such as Puzhehei. You can go there after work."
But after arriving in Yunnan, reality gave him a "whack on the head". Yunnan has complex geological features. Tunnel construction not only faces risks such as high ground stress, high geothermal heat, rich water, and harmful gases, but also has to deal with geological disasters such as landslides, sudden mud and water gushing, and large deformation of soft rocks at any time.
Take Funing Tunnel as an example. The area through which the construction passes is karst landform, and caves are often encountered during tunnel excavation. "The base of the tunnel is located in the range of the cave, and the foundation is unstable and prone to settlement, which affects the safety of construction and later operations." In order to solve this problem, Zhou Kunpeng, then the Minister of Engineering, and his team innovated the construction plan, driving piles and covering beams at the bottom of the tunnel in the way of bridge construction, first building a "bridge" in the tunnel, and then starting to build the tunnel.
In December 2015, after more than 1,800 days of hard work, the Funing Tunnel was fully connected. After getting rid of his fatigue, Zhou Kunpeng wanted to take advantage of the rare free time to go back to his hometown in Henan, but at this time, the order for the full construction of the China-Laos Railway was sounded.
"As an engineer, I have the opportunity to participate in the construction of the key projects of the Belt and Road Initiative, and I must go all out." Zhou Kunpeng plunged into another mountain and began to participate in the construction of the Xinping Tunnel of the China-Laos Railway. In order to take care of his wife and children, he brought his wife and young children to the project.
The Xinping Tunnel is another tough "hard bone". The tunnel is 14.8 kilometers long and passes through 7 fault fracture zones. The mountain is rich in water, and the surrounding rock is loose and broken. The difficulty of building the tunnel this time can be imagined.
During the construction of the Xinping Tunnel, mud and water bursts occurred frequently, and mud and water bursts of more than 2,000 cubic meters occurred more than 30 times. The construction is difficult, the safety risk is high, and the task of opening to traffic is heavy... Zhou Kunpeng goes out early and returns late, and almost all his energy is spent on the construction site. Even though his wife and children live in the living area of the construction site, he rarely has time to accompany his family. "Yunnan has countless beautiful scenery, but I have hardly taken my family out for travel, and I don't take good care of my children." When talking about his family, Zhou Kunpeng's words were full of apologies.
Crossing mountains and ridges, but not interested in seeing the scenery. In Yunnan, Zhou Kunpeng participated in the construction of 3 tunnels with a total length of 72.5 kilometers. After all of them are open to traffic, the passing time is about 30 minutes. For these 30 minutes, Zhou Kunpeng went deep into the mountains and worked for 12 years. And there are many builders like Zhou Kunpeng.
On December 3, 2021, the China-Laos Railway was fully opened to traffic. As a construction representative, Zhou Kunpeng was invited to experience the first train. Many people living in the surrounding areas took the train for the first time and sang and danced in the carriage. The joyful scene is still fresh in Zhou Kunpeng's memory. "Seeing that the railway infrastructure in the border areas is becoming more and more perfect and facilitating people's travel, I think the efforts over the years are worth it." Zhou Kunpeng said that he will continue to stick to the front line of the construction of the Gaoligong Mountain Tunnel of the Dali-Ruili Railway to ensure the safe connection of the tunnel and help the Dali-Ruili Railway to open to traffic as soon as possible.

Recently, good news came from the National Railway Administration that the Xiuling Tunnel Project of the Dali-Ruili Railway Dali to Baoshan Section (hereinafter referred to as the "Dali-Ruili Railway Dabao Section"), undertaken by the Group, won the 2023-2024 Railway Quality Project Award.
It is reported that the National Railway Administration Railway Quality Project Award is awarded every two years. It is an authoritative and influential award in the railway industry. Its selection process is rigorous and demanding. The assessment indicators cover the forward-looking nature of the project planning, the scientific nature of the technical solution, the quality control during the construction process, technological innovation, and the actual operation effect and social benefits after completion. Only 37 projects nationwide won the award this time.
The Dali-Ruili Railway is an important project in my country's "Medium- and Long-Term Railway Network Planning" to improve the road network layout and the western development. It is also an important part of the China-Myanmar International Railway Channel, one of the entry and exit channels in the southwest. The completion of this project has reshaped the new glory of the "Ancient Southern Silk Road" in history, changed the transportation pattern of southwestern Yunnan, and further highlighted the role of Yunnan as a bridge and link to Southeast Asia and South Asia. It has a significant and far-reaching impact on promoting economic and social development along the route, improving Yunnan's level of opening up to the outside world, and promoting exchanges and cooperation between my country and Southeast Asian and South Asian countries.
Among them, the 17.623-kilometer Xiuling Tunnel, which was constructed by the group company, is a key control project of the entire line and the longest tunnel of the entire line. Its geology is mainly composed of "Western Yunnan Red Layer" soft surrounding rock, with a maximum burial depth of 1,115 meters, crossing 7 fault zones, and IV and V grade surrounding rock accounts for more than 90%. The construction revealed that the geological structure is extremely developed, the surrounding rock level changes frequently, and unfavorable geology such as soft rock deformation and high ground temperature exist for a long time. During the construction period, a total of 97 large-scale landslides occurred, 73 sections of soft rock deformation, 3 mud and water surges, and countless slides and deformations, making the construction extremely difficult.
Due to the terrain restrictions, Xiuling Tunnel does not have the conditions to open horizontal tunnels, inclined shafts, and vertical shafts, and it is difficult to achieve "long tunnels and short tunnels", so it can only adopt the single-head excavation method of import and export. At the same time, due to the narrow face, high geothermal heat and high humidity, the working environment is very bad. To this end, the group company adopted measures such as adjusting the relay position of the fan, increasing the number of jet fans, transporting ice blocks for physical cooling, and adding temporary rest rooms for personnel to significantly reduce the temperature, dust, and oxygen, effectively improving the construction environment and ensuring the smooth progress of the construction.
During the construction period, in view of the possibility of collapse, deformation, and sudden mud and water at any time, the construction team also studied and formulated 4 levels of technical solutions. According to the characteristics of the surrounding rock, some sections innovatively used the cantilever tunneling machine method, effectively improving the construction efficiency by more than 40%. At the same time, focusing on the key and difficult points of construction, the construction team has successively carried out more than 100 research projects, forming 2 national patents, 3 provincial and ministerial scientific research results, and 41 enterprise-level scientific research results.
Xiuling Tunnel not only broke the record of the longest single-headed tunnel in Asia, but also is the longest rail transportation tunnel in Asia. Its completion has accumulated valuable experience for the construction of special long and difficult tunnels in my country. http://www.cr8gc.com/cr8gc/kjxq/kjcg/2025061316092744793/index.html
