PNR begins restoration of Southern Tagalog rail line
The restoration is targeted for completion by late 2025, with full operations expected by 2026, the PNR said.
MANILA, Philippines The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has started work to fully restore and upgrade its south main line, in line with President Marcos directive to prioritize the expansion of the Bicol railway from Laguna to Quezon and the Bicol region.
The restoration is targeted for completion by late 2025, with full operations expected by 2026, the PNR said.
We are fully aligned with the Presidents vision to reconnect Luzon through a more efficient and expansive railway system, the agency said in a statement. As mentioned in his SONA, the Bicol Line is a strategic lifeline that we are determined to bring back to full operation.
Currently, only two major commuter lines are running: the one between Calamba in Laguna and Lucena in Quezon, and the one in Bicol from Naga to Sipocot and Naga to Legazpi.
The PNR said that these serve as the backbone of ongoing efforts to restore full connectivity from Laguna to Legazpi and beyond.
Among the key milestones is the completion of the Binahan Bridge restoration in Ragay, Camarines Sur last June 16, reconnecting the Sipocot to Ragay segment.
The Sipocot-Ragay section is set to be operational by the third quarter of this year following rehabilitation, while track and bridge works from Lucena to Gumaca and Ragay to Tagkawayan are scheduled to open by the last quarter.
The Gumaca-Hondagua-Tagkawayan segment will partially reopen by yearend. It is currently limited to Departmental and Miscellaneous Trains due to terrain issues, including landslide repairs in Lopez, Quezon.
PNR chairman Michael Macapagal said the agency is also laying the groundwork for a future extension to Sorsogon in Bicol.
