Songkhla Residents Delighted with Achievements of "Jua Ratchasi" as Songkhla Municipality Receives Train Locomotive

On May 31, 2024, Mr. Jua Ratchasi, advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy from the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, expressed his congratulations to the people of Songkhla, especially those in the Songkhla Municipality, for receiving a train locomotive and related equipment as part of the "Project to Preserve the Community Learning Center at Songkhla Railway Station" from the State Railway of Thailand.
In 2020, when Mr. Jua Ratchasi was serving as the Assistant Secretary to the Minister of Transport, he participated in the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding for the project. This project is a collaborative effort between Songkhla Province, the State Railway of Thailand, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya Songkhla, the Songkhla City Lovers Association, and the Songkhla Municipality. The aim is to develop the Songkhla Railway Station into a learning center focused on history, enhance the surrounding landscape, renovate the platform and railway tracks, and display a locomotive and train carriages to recreate the atmosphere of the old Songkhla Railway Station. Additionally, the railway residential area will be developed into the Songkhla Railway Park, a recreational area for the benefit of Songkhla residents and neighboring communities.
This project traces back to early 2020 when the Songkhla Municipality executives consulted with Mr. Thaworn Senniam, then Deputy Minister of Transport, seeking assistance for the project. A meeting on January 29, 2020, which included Mr. Jua Ratchasi, then acting as the Secretary to the Deputy Minister of Transport (Mr. Thaworn Senniam), and representatives from the Songkhla Municipality, including Deputy Mayor Somchai Chantrapathin and Director of Building Control and Urban Planning Pisanu Charoennetkul, along with the Acting Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, concluded with a request for the Governor of Songkhla to officially seek assistance. The State Railway would then expedite the review of the materials and present the matter to the board for approval.
On February 11, 2020, the Governor of Songkhla formally requested assistance, detailing the required materials as follows:
1. Train locomotive, freight car, passenger car, bogie, and complete set of equipment.
2. Steel rails, 62 meters in length.
3. 245 two-block concrete sleepers with complete fastening equipment.
4. Other related equipment.
In October 2020, the State Railway of Thailand presented the matter to its board, which approved the request. The Songkhla Municipality allocated the 2021 budget for constructing the recreational area and preserving the atmosphere of the old railway station.
Finally, on May 30, 2024, the State Railway of Thailand successfully transported the locomotive, freight car, passenger car, bogie, and all equipment to Songkhla Railway Station. I would like to thank the State Railway of Thailand and all involved parties and congratulate Songkhla Province, Songkhla Municipality, and especially the residents of Songkhla Municipality, for the upcoming Community Learning Center at Songkhla Railway Station.
Songkhla Campaign to End the Sale of Blue Crab Juveniles

Songkhla - Mr. Charoen Omani, the Songkhla Provincial Fisheries Officer, addressed the issue of small blue crab juveniles being sold in numerous local markets and community markets over the past 2-3 months. This trend has raised concerns about the excessive and wasteful use of marine resources. The juveniles being sold are around 30-50 per kilogram, priced at only 20-50 baht per kilogram. If left to mature for a few more months, these crabs could grow to full size and fetch a much higher price of 300-500 baht per kilogram.
Mr. Charoen stated that the Songkhla Provincial Fisheries Office has been informed of this situation through complaints and social media. As a result, they invited owners and managers of over 30 markets adjacent to Songkhla Lake, in districts including Mueang, Singhanakhon, Khuan Niang, Hat Yai, and Sathing Phra, to a meeting. They were asked to cooperate in prohibiting the sale of small blue crab juveniles and other young marine animals in the markets. This effort aims to break the cycle of capturing small marine animals, which is not only wasteful but also threatens the future population of blue crabs due to the potential reduction in breeding females.
Mr. Boonhem Suwannakham, manager of the Songkhla Railway Market, mentioned that previously, small blue crab juveniles were indeed being sold by vendors. Without any measures in place, nothing could be done about it. However, following the campaign by the Songkhla Provincial Fisheries Office in collaboration with various sectors, the market has now implemented rules to discourage the buying and selling of small blue crab juveniles. They have created signs to educate vendors and promote the ban on selling small blue crab juveniles in the market from now on.

On the platform and at the entrance of the station, vendors set up their goods for sale. Tourists stroll through the market, snapping pictures with the locomotives, creating a lively atmosphere from early morning. As for the passenger carriages, they're not suitable for the homeless to stay in just yetthey need to be renovated first.
