The Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway, the only railway service in Nepal, has been shut down for indefinite period from Wednesday.

The Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway Employees Uni0n forcibly closed down the service protesting against the reinstatement of Suresh Yadav to the post of General Manager in Nepal Railway Service.
The uni0n has been demanding that the government take back its decision to reinstate Yadav, accusing him of massive corruption and irregularities during his previous stint at the railway service.
Few months backs, locals of Mahottari had obstructed the survey work of Janakpur- Jayanagar Railway that had begun with the purpose of its expansion and converting it into a broad gauge.
Currently, the railway service only in 29 kilometres from Janakpur to Jayanagar is in operation. nepalnews.com
Bihar Nepal Rail links will be re-instated soon, this time with broad gauge track. The Train would ply between Bathnaha in Araria district and Biratnagar (Nepal) along 18 km rail route. This would be the only rail link between India and Nepal.

Work on the new rail line is being carried out and the train is likely to be flagged off in another 2 years. 5 km of the new rail line falls in India while the rest falls in Nepal. The whole project would cost Indian Railways Rs 248 crores.
Incidentally, it was the dream project of then Rail Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav who laid the foundation stone of the new line in 2007.
The railways also proposed to upgrade the Bathnaha railway station into a model station which will provide better amenities to commuters from across the border as well.
NEW DELHI, FEB. 3 2012:
Ircon has signed an agreement with Northeast Frontier Railway for construction of a new broad gauge rail line between Jogbani in north Bihar and Biratnagar in Nepal.
The project is proposed to be completed in two years at an estimated cost of Rs 238 crore, said an official release.
ALIGNMENT
The proposed alignment connecting Bathnaha (near Jogbani, Bihar) to Biratnagar (Nepal) will pass through international Indo-Nepal border with three new station yards Indian custom yard, Nepal custom yard and Biratnagar terminal yard.

"I propose to take up a project to connect Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh," said Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi while presenting his maiden budget Wednesday.
Trivedi said the proposed rail link will not only improve bilateral ties between the two countries but will also help in establishing connectivity with inaccessible areas in northeast as journey from Kolkata to Tripura via Bangladesh will result in significant saving in time and distance travelled.

The railways has been taking up such projects to provide rail connectivity to neighbouring countries.
In 2011-12, the railways had taken up two projects -- Jogbani-Biratnagar new line and Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas line -- to provide connectivity with Nepal.
