Paying train ticket through ATMs

JAKARTA Post Tue, 12/09/2008 10:58 AM | City

JAKARTA: State railway operator PT Kereta Api has signed an agreement with two banks to allow passengers to buy tickets through ATMs to eliminate the hassle of having to queue at stations.

"We have expanded our ticketing service through this new deal with BRI (Bank Rakyat Indonesia) and BII (Bank International Indonesia)," KA spokesman for the Greater Jakarta area, Akhmad Sujadi, was quoted by detik.com as saying on Saturday.

He said the service commenced on Dec. 5. KA planned to have a similar deal with 20 more banks from February next year, he said.

"So, it will be like booking a plane ticket," he said.

Sujadi said to buy a ticket, a passenger needed to call KA's call center on 13897 or 021-2350-7000. A KA officer will then give out a booking code to be used while paying at the ATM. Later, the proof of purchase from the ATM can be exchanged for a ticket before departing at the station, he added.

The service applies to business and executive-class trains throughout the country, he said. -JP

The Sukabumi-Bogor train to resume operation

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta
Saturday, December 13, 2008 8:49 PM

The Sukabumi-Bogor train is set to resume operation on Saturday after a two year absence.

PT Kereta Api Jakarta spokesman Akhmad Sujadi told Kompas.com that Transportation Minister Jusman Safeii Djamal would personally officiate the opening of the train route.

The operation of the Bumi Geulis business train was previously suspended due to railtrack damages along West Java's Sukabumi-Bogor line.

The government is said to have invested Rp 54 billion to rehabilitate the 54-kilometer rail.

The Sukabumi-Cianjur route is a two-hour train ride and tickets are sold at Rp 8,000 for a single ride.

The Jakarta Post. Can you explain to me which traject is restored?
Is it Sukabumi - Bogor? In you last sentence you wrote Sukabumi -Cianjur which is in the oposite direction of Sukabumi.
Is there any possibility to open the whole traject from Bogor to Bandung via Sukabumi?

I would apreciate if you could answer me.

New Semarang-Tegal train launched
Suherdjoko ,
The Jakarta Post , Semarang | Saturday, December 13, 2008 8:41 PM

Railway passengers in Central Java's northern coastal area can now ride in comfort thanks to the Kaligung Baru commuter train on the Semarang-Tegal line.

The train was officially launched by Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal at Poncol Station in Semarang on Friday. The minister was accompanied by Central Java deputy governor Rustriningsih.

The train has four carriages and is equipped with driver cabins on each end to expedite operation.

State railway operator PT Kereta Api (PT KA) president director Ronny Wahyudi said that data showed the Indonesian Self-powered Diesel Train (KRDI) Kaligung catered to 30,000 business-class and 33,000 economy-class passengers in 2007, adding that the number had increased to 38,000 business-class and 44,000 economy class passengers, or an increase of 29 percent and 47 percent respectively, by year's end.

"This indicates that passenger appeal is growing, especially when the distance of 148 kilometers between Semarang to Tegal can be crossed within two-and-a-half hours," Ronny said.

"That's faster than any other land transportation, on top of its punctual schedule."

The procurement of KRDI trains in Central Java cost Rp 59.4 billion (US$5.3 million) in the 2007 and 2008 state budgets.

PT KA launched the KRDI Banyubiru on Sept. 19 to serve the Semarang-Solo-Sragen line. The Transportation Ministry plans to launch the Semarang-Cepu-Bojonegoro line soon.

Minister Jusman said the KRDI Kaligung Baru would likely be extended to serve the Semarang-Tegal-Prupuk line.

"I'm told that around 10,000 business-class and the same number of economy-class passengers commute by the KRDI daily," Yusman said.

He said he believed a train community could be established by the frequent encounters between commuters, such as that on the KRDI Prambanan Express (Pramex), which serves the Yogyakarta-Surakarta line.

"Comfort and safety can be enhanced thanks to them caring for each other. They can remind others not to smoke on the train, as well as admonishing those riding free," Yusman said.

Rustriningsih proposed the Transportation Ministry also revive the Semarang-Borobudur line, which is occupied by dozens of squatters and an old station converted into a bus terminal.

"The aim of the KRDI trains is to support economic development. I also hope the trains operate according to schedule. In Germany, trains operate on time, failing which they would be in the media spotlight," Rustriningsih said.

The KRDI trains, produced by state-owned train maker PT INKA, are more comfortable than regular trains, thanks to the use of bolsterless boogies, or secondary air springs to absorb vertical and horizontal shocks and vibrations, thus enhancing comfort.

A KRDI train can carry 608 passengers: 130 passengers in each carriage with a driver's cabin and 174 in the other carriages. A business-class ticket for the Kaligung Baru costs Rp 25,000 (ชั้น 2 คิด 100 บาท) and an economy-class ticket Rp 13,000. (ชั้น 3 คิด 52 บาท)

MRT construction 'sure' to start 2010, firm says
Tifa Asrianti ,
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Fri, 12 Dec 2008 11:43 AM | City

PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta (MRTJ) is upbeat construction on the capital's new mass rapid transportation system will commence by early 2010 following a land acquisition process scheduled for next year.

Eddi Santosa, the company's director, said he was optimistic the land acquisition stage could be completed swiftly, citing that only 4 hectares were needed for the route from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta. The route is expected to be completed by 2014.

"The 4-hectare area of land will be used to build a depot in Lebak Bulus. The rest of the railway network will be built under or above the streets," he said.

The city administration has allocated Rp 40 billion from this year's budget to buy land for the depot and to construct the depot.

Some 3.4 kilometers of the 14.3-kilometer-long Lebak Bulus-Dukuh Atas route will be underground, with the rest elevated.

"The MRT will go underground from Dukuh Atas to Jl. Majapahit in Central Jakarta, because the area is classified as Ring 1 (top security priority), where there should be no obstacles above the ground. The MRT will resurface again at Kampung Bandan," he said.

He said the city administration would perform sub-surface scans to ensure utility networks were not damaged by construction, and that the stations would be built between 8 and 12 meters below the streets -- well below utility pipelines.

"As for the elevated structures, the transportation ministry has also made a study about the construction process, including on how to avoid congestion during the construction period," he said.

The north-south route will link Kota in West Jakarta and Lebak Bulus. Construction on the route, which is expected to be completed by 2018, will be divided into two phases.

"The MRT route can help bring life back to the (neglected) Old Town area," he said.

The administration also plans to utilize pylons built for the abolished monorail project to construct an MRT route linking Pulo Gebang in East Jakarta and Kebon Jeruk in West Jakarta.

"If the east-west route is agreed, it can serve commuters from Bekasi and Tangerang. If the axis is completed, we can make an encircling network," Eddi said.

He said the MRT would have a maximum capacity of 300,000 passengers per day, with an average travel time of 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

The company has planned to operate 17 trains, each to have six cars.

Ahmad Harjadi, head of Jakarta's planning and development bureau, said the administration planned to integrate the MRT with other transportation networks, including the busway and the inner city train network.

"Besides integrating the network, we also plan to integrate the ticket systems so that people can transfer from one mode of transportation to another without having to buy a new ticket," he said.

City to operate Jakarta-Bekasi electric night rail
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Wed, 12/17/2008 10:34 AM | Jakarta

PT Kereta Api Indonesia(PT KAI), state owned railway company, is set to operate the first electric night train (KRL) serving passengers from Jakarta to Bekasi Wednesday in a bid to accommodate high demands of commuters from both destinations.

KAI's spokesperson for Jakarta area Akhmad Sujadi said on Wednesday that the air-conditioned economic class train would depart from Kota railway station in West Jakarta at 10 p.m.

"The train is aimed at carrying workers who want to return homes above 10 o'clock at night from Jakarta to Bekasi and vice versa," he told kompas.com on Wednesday.

Thus far, he said, the latest train from the city to Bekasi was at 9 p.m., and departed from Senen railway station.

"And now, the new train will carry passengers from the city to Bekasi via Gambir station at 10 p.m., while for passengers from Bekasi, they can take the train at 9 p.m at the Bekasi station ," he said.

He said that the train would carry passengers from Monday to Friday and each passenger would only pay Rp 5,000 (US$ 41 cents - แค่ 20 บาทเอง) for a trip. The train can carry up to 800 people in eight railway coaches.

Prior to the Jakarta-Bekasi train, KAI has already operated economic class trains serving passengers from the city to neighboring Depok, Serpong and Bogor. (ewd)

$1.62b MRT system for Jakarta
Work on rail network to start in 2011 in a bid to ease traffic congestion
By Wahyudi Soeriaatmadja , INDONESIA CORRESPONDENT
The Strait Times - Jan 5, 2009

JAKARTA: - Indonesia will start building its first mass rapid transit (MRT) system worth 12.3 trillion rupiah (S$1.62 billion) in Jakarta in early 2011 as it struggles to ease traffic congestion in the capital where the roads are used by 11/2 million cars daily.

The construction of the 14.5km network, going from a densely-populated suburb in South Jakarta to a downtown area, will be completed in late 2015.

Eight of the 12 MRT stations will be elevated, while the remainder will be built underground. The MRT will be served by 117 train coaches.

'We will build a system that's similar to that in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok. This will be a standard MRT that offers convenient, reliable and safe service,' Mr Eddie Santosa, director of Jakarta government-owned PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta, the would-be operator of the MRT, told The Straits Times.

He said: 'This will be integrated with the existing city bus station network.'

'Anything that offers a chance to ease traffic jams would be good,' Mr Hasan Salim, 31, a South Jakarta resident, said. However, he doubted the project would help alleviate traffic jams significantly.

A trip within Jakarta during rush hour can take over two hours, while that same trip may take only 15 minutes on Sunday.

Mr Surato, in his 40's, who lives in Bekasi and commutes to Jakarta for work every day, has a different view about the planned MRT project: 'They should get rid of the city's flooding problem first before thinking about having an underground station.'

The Jakarta MRT project is a revival of the first plan, proposed by a company owned by the oldest daughter of the late former President Suharto, which did not proceed because of the Asian financial crisis in 1997. A monorail project proposed by a different private company in 2004 was also aborted after its main financial backer pulled out.

'Now we have our national government and city government saying they are in this together. Last time the commitment wasn't as strong as it is today,' said Mr Eddie, responding to doubts that the project may again be delayed.

PT MRT Jakarta is currently on the technical design and land clearing phase, before contractors are invited next year to bid for two separate tenders, one for the construction work and the other to handle the electrical and mechanical aspects of the system, Mr Eddie said.

Jakarta, which extends across 650 sq km, has seen worsening traffic jams in recent years as the number of motor vehicles has been growing by 9.5 per cent a year in the past five years.

There were about 20 million trips everyday in the city at end-2007, and 70 per cent of those are people on private vehicles or public transport, and the remaining 30 per cent on foot, according to the city government's latest data. The MRT will have the capacity to accommodate about 3 million trips a day, Mr Eddie said.

There are about 8.7 million registered vehicles in Jakarta and the surrounding towns of Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. Many residents in the cities just outside Jakarta commute to the capital for work.

'People living in Bekasi typically spend one-third of their monthly salary on transport costs. This is huge. The average Singaporean may spend only 7 per cent or less because he lives relatively near an MRT station,' Mr Eddie said.

Japan International Cooperation Agency has committed to funding the MRT project. It will be a soft loan with a 0.2per cent interest rate a year, he said, adding that the interest costs will be borne both by the Jakarta government and the national government.

Train company made Unexpected profit
Wed, 01/07/2009 11:17 AM

JAKARTA: The state-owned train company PT Kereta Api (KA) made an unexpected Rp 40 billion (US$ 3.7 million) in profits, despite a forecast Rp 57 billion loss, because of fewer accidents, improved efficiency and better sales.

The company's performance improved after it made investments in renewing rolling stock and carriages and increasing safety measures.

"We thought we would make a loss because of the investments, but apparently (the return) came back positively," president director Ronny Wahyudi said.

Better sales of business and executive class tickets and a shift from airplanes to trains because of higher air fares, also helped to boost profits. Ronny said the profits would be allocated to employee incentive programs to increase their efficiency.

The company is targeting to make up to Rp 12.5 billion in profits in 2009.

Meanwhile, in 2008, KA received Rp 544 billion from the government through the public service obligation (PSO) subsidy for keeping the ticket price for the economy class below its operational cost. -- JP

Mon, 01/19/2009 6:00 PM | City

JAKARTA: The city administration plans to develop a North Jakarta transportation hub called Pluit City Terminal, with train tracks running from the terminal to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

"This transportation would help residents as well as ease traffic congestion."

The train terminal will be built this year, he said. - JP
