The hinterland of Semarang, capital of the province of Central Java is lush green: a beautiful scenic landscape of rising volcanoes, green valleys and fertile rice fields. Cruise lines call on Semarang to allow passengers to visit the nearby 9th century Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
One and a half hours driving from Semarang on a smooth road towards Salatiga, one enjoys the true Javanese rural life all the way to the town of Ambarawa , some 17 km north from Salatiga. This is the halfway mark to Borobudur.
Here in Ambarawa you can find Indonesias Railway Museum, home to 21 old steam locomotives, the oldest of which is the 1891 Hartmann Chemnitz, in use until the 1970s when the railways here were closed. Nearby is also a natural grotto to the Virgin Mary and the Stations of the Cross, surrounded by flower gardens and fish ponds.
Slightly further west in the Dieng plateau are the ancient temples known as Gedong Songo, or the nine buildings, constructed between 730 AD -780 AD during the Sanjaya Dynasty.
Also not far from Ambarawa are the Losari Coffee plantation and the hill town of Bandungan, favorite recreation area for people from Semarang and Yogyakarta.
But Ambarawa also has a grimmer side to its history when during World War II, the Japanese interned European families in camps here.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and its Japanese counterpart, Keidanren, are ready to begin building the Jakarta-Surabaya fast train track in 2014, a Kadin executive said on Wednesday.
Kadin deputy chairman for trade, distribution and logistics, M. Natsyir Mansyur said after a discussion on railway transportation, that the project could only start after the government completed the construction of the double track between Jakarta and Surabaya.
The fast train can reduce the Jakarta-Surabaya journey to just four hours and the railway will use the doubletrack that is targeted for completion in 2013, Natsyir said.
He said Kadin hoped to hold a 51 percent majority in the venture with Keidanren, but so far the share ownership and the total investment value had not yet been determined.
Keidanren said it was interested in the project because of the bright potential of the railway business, he said.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Trans Sumatra railway track that is connecting several segments of railway tracks on the island is expected to begin in five years, the director for railway facilities at the transportation ministry, Sugiadi Waluyo, said.
We are still conducting a study related to the Trans Sumatra railway track. This project will be built using a public private partnership scheme, Sugiadi said, adding that the government was currently looking for investor interested in taking part in the project.

Two Airport Railway Projects Slated for Completion in 2013
Jakarta Globe June 15, 2012
State railway company Kereta Api Indonesia will undertake two railway projects for city-to-airport access, with lines connecting Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Jakarta and Kuala Namu International Airport to Medan both expected to be completed in 2013.
Handy Purnama, KAIs commercial director, said the railway projects were in the process of licensing.
Currently, the documents to permit this network are being given to the Minister of Communications [Tifatul Sembiring] in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 83/2011, Handy said on Thursday.
Handy said the company has proposed the development of a railway to Soekarno-Hatta to be completed in 2013, consisting of a 65-kilometer line. The Medan project will lay a 5-kilometer track, and will likely be completed first.
Railway analyst Setijowarno Djoko said with the construction of the railway, Kuala Namu would be the first international airport in Indonesia equipped with airport rail access.
This rail line will connect the airport and the city of Medan. Railway transportation to the airport will be the main choice among citizens, he said.
However Djoko added that the train station needed to be prepared for an influx of passengers when the train begins running the Kuala Namu route.
Currently, the condition of Medan station is not adequate, he explained. To create the conditions of a productive station, I think it needs to be repaired.
