Increasing Carrying Capacity, KAI Signs Locomotive Procurement Cooperation Contract with Progress Rail (a Caterpillar Subsidiary)
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) together with Progress Rail (a subsidiary of Caterpillar) from the United States signed a Cooperation Contract for the procurement of 54 locomotives at the Jakarta Railways Center Building, Central Jakarta on Thursday (15/2/2024).
The signing of this agreement was carried out by KAI Commercial Director Hadis Surya Palapa and Area Sales Director Asia Pacific and South East Asia Progress Rail Matthew Dunwoodie and witnessed by the Director General of Railways Mohamad Risal Wasal, Commercial Attaché of the United States Embassy Melissa A. Marszalek, and the Main Director of KAI Didiek Hartantyo.
This agreement is one of KAI's strategic steps in its plan to develop goods transportation in South Sumatra. The procurement of 54 new locomotives is a continuation of the previous purchase of 91 locomotives that KAI received since 2011.
"The signing of this contract is a concrete manifestation of the government's presence in providing rail transportation for the community through KAI services. This locomotive is equipped with the latest technology and environmentally friendly features. "So we can achieve high standards in supporting environmental sustainability," said KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo.
The locomotive that will be imported is of the GT38AC type or what is known in Indonesia as CC 205. The ability to pull large trains or carriages from this type of locomotive has had a significant impact in terms of efficiency and carbon emissions.
This type of locomotive was specifically designed for the Southeast Asian environment and has been proven to operate well using environmentally friendly biodiesel (B35) fuel. The features of this locomotive include a 710 eight-cylinder engine, a strong and durable AC traction motor, and a cab and locomotive body design that supports the driver's visibility.
The 54 locomotives will arrive in stages from April 2025 to April 2026. Procurement of these locomotives will support the target of 85 million tonnes of coal transportation in Southern Sumatra in 2026, where in 2023 51 million tonnes will have been achieved. The purchase of this locomotive is also intended to support domestic energy growth and meet increasing international energy demand.
"KAI continues to build collaborations with companies at home and abroad as the Company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, mitigating pollution, as well as the aim of caring for Indonesia's natural heritage for future generations," said Didiek.
Executive Vice President of Locomotive Progress Rail, Jack Zhang, said that his party welcomed the opportunity to collaborate again with KAI in presenting GT series locomotives which have demonstrated excellent performance, reliability and efficiency.
"We hope to continue our support for KAI with the solutions we offer to help them achieve their operational and emission reduction goals," said Jack Zhang. (KAI Public Relations)
