Chanthaburi Durian Exporters Expand Trade with China through Rail Transport
Chanthaburi, Thailand Durian exporters in Chanthaburi Province have signed a significant agreement to enhance the export of Thai durian to China via rail transportation. This solution addresses the long-standing problem of delayed shipments at border checkpoints. The agreement, witnessed by Chanthaburi Governor Monsit Phaisalthanawat, emphasizes the importance of maintaining high-quality durian standards, as China remains a major buyer of the fruit.
The memorandum of understanding was signed between the KAF Group (KAF), Riverking, and Global Multimodal Logistics Co., Ltd. (GML). Key figures in attendance included representatives from the Chanthaburi Provincial Commercial Office, the Chanthaburi Provincial Plant Inspection Station, along with executives from JD Supermarket, the Yuxian Group of Companies, and the KAF Group of Companies.
Mr. Kraiyasit Inthaphanit, Managing Director of GML (a subsidiary of the PTT Group), explained that rail transport offers a reliable and efficient alternative for exporting Thai durian to China. The company plays a vital role in connecting Thailand's transportation networks by rail, sea, land, and air. GML has already transported over 100 containers of durian this season and is equipped to handle over 1,000 containers for major Chinese cities such as Kunming, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Zhengzhou.
Mr. Gao Eishin, Chairman of the KAF Group, expressed confidence in the new agreement facilitating greater market access for both fresh and frozen Thai durian. He believes the partnership with GML and JD Supermarket, a leading Chinese fruit distributor, will enable KAF to significantly expand its footprint in China.
"China continues to have a strong appetite for quality Thai durian. This new export channel, particularly the rail transport option, enhances our logistical capabilities, said Mr. Gao Eishin. "We urge Thai farmers to maintain the excellent quality of their durian to meet China's high demand."

Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce, Mr. Naphinthorn Srisanpang, visited the Hu Ngi International Checkpoint and Dong Dang Railway Checkpoint in Vietnam to discuss the upcoming Thai fruit season and strategies to streamline exports to China. He met with Mr. Ho Tien Thio, Chairman of the Lang Son Province People's Committee, and local administrators to address potential congestion issues during the peak season.
Mr. Srisanpang anticipates a substantial durian harvest in Thailand, with an estimated 780,000 tons expected in the eastern region alone. To ensure efficient transportation, Thailand primarily utilizes the Hu Ngi land checkpoint and Dong Dang Railway Checkpoint in Vietnam for exports to China.
The Deputy Minister outlined a three-phase plan aiming for a 24-hour transit time from Thailand to China. This plan includes:
Short-term: Close monitoring of Vietnamese border checkpoints, increased coordination with Lang Son Province, and tracking of fruit transport volumes.
Medium-term: Leveraging the upcoming 24-hour smart checkpoint channels and advocating for the Tan Thanh-Dan Phu checkpoint to handle all Thailand-China export goods.
Long-term: Engagement in discussions regarding a potential 14-channel border checkpoint for seamless export-import flow.
Mr. Srisanpang has tasked the Thai commercial attaché in Hanoi with closely monitoring the situation, facilitating communication and problem-solving between Thai and Vietnamese officials, and providing timely updates to Thai exporters.

Thai-Xishuangbanna Raise the Level of Trade-Tourism
Monday, April 29, 2024, 6:00 a.m.
Bangkok, Thailand Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, revealed that after leading a delegation of Ministry of Commerce executives on an official visit to the People's Republic of China and the Lao People's Democratic Republic between April 27-29, 2024, important discussions were held with Mr. Dao Wen, Governor of the Xishuangbanna Autonomous Region, Yunnan Province. The meeting took place at the Mekong River Jing Land Hotel meeting room, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, on the evening of April 27, 2024.
Mr. Phumtham emphasized the importance of the visit to Xishuangbanna, an autonomous region in southern China's Yunnan province with close proximity to Thailand. The region plays a crucial role in the import and export of agricultural products such as vegetables, fresh and frozen fruits, processed fruits, spices, and various consumer goods. The Prime Minister has expressed concern about potential challenges Thai farmers may face during the upcoming fruit season when produce volume is high.
Discussions with the Governor of the Xishuangbanna Autonomous Region addressed these concerns. The Thai delegation requested an increase in the number of shipping containers to accommodate the anticipated demand during the fruit season. Additionally, Thailand raised the issue of exporting live cattle to China and sought assistance in expediting negotiations to establish disease-free zones for successful trade. Both Thai officials and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) are currently collaborating on this initiative.
The discussion also focused on facilitating the transportation of goods from Thailand's Chiang Saen port checkpoint through the Mekong River to the Chinese port of Guanlei. The Xishuangbanna governor was asked to assist in preparing a suitable location for a live cattle slaughterhouse to support imports from Thailand. A successful outcome would bring mutual benefits to both countries by reducing transportation costs and increasing convenience and efficiency. The governor noted that infrastructure improvements along this route are underway to support future trade expansion plans. The Thai Department of Foreign Trade and its advisory committee have been instructed to closely monitor progress.
In addition, the Governor of the Xishuangbanna Autonomous Region requested Thailand's support in opening a Xishuangbanna-Bangkok flight route. Currently, a direct flight between Chiang Mai and Xishuangbanna operates once daily. Expanding flight options would boost tourism and further increase trade value between the two countries. Mr. Phumtham has committed to follow up on this request.
Following the meeting, Mr. Phumtham will visit the Mohan (China) and Boten (Laos) checkpoints to negotiate extended operating hours. This aims to reduce congestion in goods shipments. He will also visit the Mohan Railway Checkpoint to assess the status of freight transport and discuss procedures for inspecting and releasing Thai fruits.
