ปัญหารถไฟพม่า ที่จนป่านนี้ยังไม่เชื่อมต่อกับเพื่อนบ้านเป็นการถาวรเสียที แม้จะมีความพยายามมาแต่สมัยอาณานิคมก็ตามที เช่นการเปิดทางสายมัณฑะเลย์ไปลาเฉียวที่ต้องสร้างสะพานหอสูง Goteik โดยผู้รับเหมาอเมริกัน (Pennsylvania Steel Company ) เมื่อปี 1900 - 1901 สายนี้รายได้จากการถลุ่งแร่เงินก่อนจะแยกเอาแร่ตะกั่วออกมาส่งลงทางรถไฟไปออกท่าเรือย่างกุ้ง โดยบริษัท he Burma Mining Company ของนายช่างอเมริกัน Herbert C. Hoover งานนี้รัฐบาลอังกฤษที่บริหารพม่า ก็เคืองจนต้องยื่นคำขาดว่าจะโอนสัญชาติเป็นอังกฤษหรือยอมขายกิจการเหมืองแร่เงินปนตะกั่ว งานนี้ยอมปิดเหมืองดีกว่า
ตอกนกิดสงครามจีน - ญี่ปุ่นปี 1937 ก็ได้ความคิดทำทารถไฟ แต่ทำไม่ทันไรก็ต้องทิ้ง แม้แต่ถนนสายพม่าและ ถนน Ledo ก็ต้องทิ้งหลังสิ้นสงคราม
แม้แต่จีนที่สรางรถไฟไปทิเบตได้ และ รถไฟความไวสูงก็ยังไม่สามารถทำทางรถไฟไปด่านรุ่ยหลี่ก่อนทะลุเข้าพม่าแม้จะวางท่อก๊าซและน้ำมันได้แล้ว ที่เป็นเช่นนี้ก็เพราะ พม่าตอนนี้เป็นทุรยุค ที่ ยากจะทำโครงการอะไรต่อมิอะไรได้ แม้แต้การปราบทหารชนเผ่าก็ยังมีปัญหาทำให้ไปต่อไม่ได้

การรถไฟพม่ากำลังวางแผนที่จะอำนวยความสะดวกในการเดินทางของผู้คนและเร่งการไหลเวียนของสินค้า

การรถไฟพม่าภายใต้กระทรวงคมนาคมและการสื่อสารกำลังจัดเตรียมการเดินรถไฟระหว่าง PyinOoLwin และ Gokteik โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่วันที่ 22 ธันวาคม (วันหยุดปีใหม่ Kayin) เพื่อให้นักท่องเที่ยวในและต่างประเทศสามารถเยี่ยมชมสะพาน Gokteik อันเก่าแก่ เพลิดเพลินกับความงามตามธรรมชาติของภูเขา เพาะปลูก มิตรภาพกับคนในท้องถิ่นและได้รับความรู้ทั่วไป

รถไฟ RBE จะออกจากสถานี PyinOoLwin เวลา 08.30 น. และถึงสถานี Gokteik เวลา 13.00 น. โดยจะออกจากสถานี Gokteik เวลา 14.00 น. และกลับถึงสถานี PyinOoLwin เวลา 17.30 น. ผู้โดยสารสี่สิบคนจะสามารถนั่งได้ในการเดินทาง โดยจะจอดที่สถานี Pwekauk, Watwun, Salsam และ Nawnghio ราคาตั๋วจะอยู่ที่ K3,500 ต่อผู้โดยสารหนึ่งคน — MMR/KZW

ตารางเวลาของรถไฟด่วนสายย่างกุ้ง-มะละแหม่งจะมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตั้งแต่วันที่ 20 ธันวาคม ตามการรถไฟเมียนมาร์

รถไฟเที่ยวขึ้นหมายเลข 81 จะออกจากย่างกุ้งเวลา 06.30 น. ถึงมะละแหม่งเวลา 16.00 น. และรถไฟเที่ยวล่องหมายเลข 82 จะออกจากมะละแหม่งเวลา 08.30 น. ถึงย่างกุ้งเวลา 18.00 น. รถไฟจะจอดที่สถานี Toegyaunggale, Bago, Theinzayet, Kyaikto, Toungson, Hninpale, Thaton และ Paung

นอกจากนี้ รถไฟขบวน No 89 Up จะออกจากย่างกุ้งเวลา 07.45 น. ถึงมะละแหม่งเวลา 17.45 น. รถไฟขบวนหมายเลข 90 จะออกจากมะละแหม่งเวลา 09.15 น. และถึงย่างกุ้งเวลา 19.15 น. รถไฟสาย 89 ขึ้นและลง 90 จะหยุดที่สถานี Toegyaunggale, Bago, Waw, Theinzayet, Moppalin, Kyaikkatha, Thaton, Mayangon, Toungson, Hninpale, Theinseik, Yinnyein, Zinkyaik, Paung และ Mottama
ราคาบัตรอยู่ที่ K7,050 สำหรับชั้นบน และ K3,550 สำหรับชั้นธรรมดา

Myanmar Railways has not implemented Online Ticket system yet, so the passengers have to purchase tickets at the stations in the following manners:

Train tickets are sold at the respective station. Normal tickets are sold up to 10 minutes before the train departure. High school tickets are sold one day in advance and 10 minutes before the departure of the train.

เกิดเหตุระเบิดที่สถานีรถไฟในเมียนมา ส่งผลให้มีผู้เสียชีวิต 3 ราย

ทีมข้อมูลข่าวสาร และสื่อในเมียนมา รายงานว่า มีผู้เสียชีวิต 3 ราย บาดเจ็บ 9 คน จากการเกิดเหตุระเบิดที่สถานีรถไฟแห่งหนึ่งในเมืองเญาง์เลบิน ซึ่งอยู่ในภูมิภาคพะโค วานนี้ โดยรัฐบาลทหารเมียนมา ระบุ กองกำลังป้องกันประชาชน ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มต่อต้านรัฐประหาร เป็นผู้ก่อเหตุระเบิดดังกล่าว

ไม่มีรถไฟเดินจากมัณฑะเลย์ ไปชเวโบ และ มิตจีนา เพราะ คนรถไฟพม่าประท้วงหลังเกิดรัฐประหาร เมื่อต้นกุมภาพันธ์ 2021 และทางรถไฟในรัฐกะฉิ่นและมณฑลจักกาย ถูก Kachin Independence Army (KIA) ยึด และ รถโดยสารที่ยังมีเดิน ก็แพงกว่ารถไฟตั้ง 2 เท่า
