Saudi's transport minister Jabara Al-Seraisry says the kingdom's Haramain High Speed Rail service will begin operations by early 2014.
The service will link Makkah, Jeddah, Rabigh and Madinah and is currently in its second and final phase.
Earlier this year, Saudi government officials signed off more than $8.2 billion in contracts for Phase 2 which will see the purchase of 35 trains, along with 13 carriages, traffic signs and railway tracks, which are set to be installed by a Saudi consortium at a reported cost of around $8bn.
Al-Seraisry, also serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Railway Organisation (SRO), made the statement in an inspection tour of the work site of a railway station on King Abdul Aziz Street in Madinah on Friday.
He was also reported as saying a sixth station would be added to the service. The station will be built at Abyar Ali in Madinah, and would be built after the five original planned stations had been built.
Those include stations at Makkak, Jeddah city, King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh and Madinah.
