The Daily News Transportation Innovation News Team reports that a fleet of 20 Kiha 40 and Kiha 48 train cars, formerly owned by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), will be delivered to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The cars have been disassembled at Niigata Port, Japan in preparation for transport to Laem Chabang Port in Thailand. The transportation is expected to take place in May, and is being carried out by Green Generation Worldwide Company Limited at a cost of 48.6 million baht.
Upon arrival in Thailand, the SRT will adjust the cars' wheelbase from 1.067 meters to 1.00 meters at the Makkasan factory, a process estimated to take 25 days. The cars will then be returned to Laem Chabang Port for reassembly, and transported back to Makkasan factory via rail for further renovations. The first completed car is expected to be in public service by the end of 2024.
