The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the State Railway of Thailand welcomed a group of media and influencers from Laos who took a trial run on the train from Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) to Bangkok Grand Central Station. The goal is to attract 1 million Lao tourists to Thailand in the near future.
Today (July 14) at Bangkok Grand Central Station, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, along with executives from the State Railway of Thailand, welcomed media and influencers (KOLs) from Laos who arrived on Express Train No. 134 from Vientiane (Khamsavath) to Bangkok Grand Central Station. This was a simulated trial run before the official service launch. The inaugural train, Express Train No. 133 from Bangkok to Vientiane (Khamsavath), will depart on Friday, July 19, at 21:25.
The Lao media and influencers group departed from Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) yesterday evening (July 13). The train crossed the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, went through passport control at Nong Khai station, and arrived at Bangkok Grand Central Station at 06:10 this morning.
Ms. Thapanee stated that the opening of the railway service between Thailand and Laos will help maintain Thailand's position as a popular destination for Lao tourists and push the number of visitors from Laos to reach 1 million in the near future. Recent measures to facilitate travel for Lao citizens to Thailand include the suspension of TM.6 immigration forms from April 15 to October 15 at major border crossings such as Nong Khai, Mukdahan, and Chiang Rai. Other factors like the variety of affordable Thai products and quality services in Thailand also promote cross-border tourism and trade, encouraging more Lao visitors to travel to Thailand for tourism, work, shopping, medical consultations, and social gatherings.
For 2024, Thailand aims to attract 977,000 tourists from Laos, generating tourism revenue of over 36.96 billion baht.
Express Trains No. 133 and 134 consist of:
- 152 seats in 3rd class (fan) carriages, with fares from Bangkok to Vientiane at 281 baht
- 64 seats in 2nd class air-conditioned carriages, with fares at 574 baht
- 30 seats in 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper carriages, with upper berth fares at 784 baht and lower berth at 874 baht
Bookings can be made up to 180 days in advance at railway stations nationwide, through the Call Center 1690, or via the State Railway of Thailand's website and D-Ticket application.

Travel Service Options: Bus Service to Cambodia Resumes in September
Mr. Athawit Rakchamroon, Director and Acting Managing Director of Transport Co., Ltd. (Bor Khor Sor), revealed that between September and October 2024, Bor Khor Sor will resume international bus services between Thailand and Cambodia on two routes:
1. Bangkok-Aranyaprathet-Poipet-Phnom Penh (719 km, 11-hour journey, fare 900 baht)
2. Bangkok-Aranyaprathet-Poipet-Siem Reap (424 km, 7-hour journey, fare 750 baht)
These routes were previously operational from 2013-2014 but were temporarily suspended in late 2019 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. They expect a good reception for these resumed services.
Mr. Athawit added that before COVID-19, Bor Khor Sor operated 15 international routes. Three routes connecting to Vientiane, Laos, have already resumed:
1. Bangkok-Vientiane: 2 round trips daily, 648 km, 10-hour journey, fare 900 baht
2. Nong Khai-Vientiane: 4 round trips daily, 27 km, 2-hour journey, fare 55 baht
3. Udon Thani-Vientiane: 6 round trips daily, 77 km, 3-hour journey, fare 80 baht
These three routes serve about 286 passengers per day, not including those traveling on Lao buses.
When asked if the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) planned Bangkok-Vientiane (Khamsavath) train service would affect Bor Khor Sor's Lao routes, Mr. Athawit said it shouldn't have an impact as they serve different routes. Bor Khor Sor's buses go directly into Vientiane city, targeting a different group of passengers. He's confident their ridership will remain stable and views SRT's new train service as a positive development, offering more travel options for the public and tourists.
The reporter noted that for the SRT's Express Train 133/134 Bangkok-Vientiane (Khamsavath)-Bangkok, the 13-hour journey costs:
- 3rd class seat: 281 baht
- 2nd class seat: 414 baht
- 2nd class air-conditioned seat: 574 baht
- 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper: Upper bed 784 baht, Lower bed 874 baht
For the Express Train 147/148 Udon Thani-Vientiane (Khamsavath)-Udon Thani, the 2-hour journey costs:
- Fan car: 100 baht
- Air-conditioned car: 200 baht
