On July 20, 2024, Mr. Surapong Piyachot, Deputy Minister of Transport, presided over the welcoming ceremony for passengers and tourists on the inaugural international train service between Thailand and Lao PDR on the Bangkok Apiwat - Vientiane (ຄໍາສະຫວາດ) route. This service aims to facilitate travel connections for citizens and tourists, as well as freight transport between the two countries.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Saisongkham Manotham (ໄຊສົງຄາມ ມະໂນທໍາ), Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport of Lao PDR, along with other high-ranking officials from both countries.
The international train service between Thailand and Lao PDR on the Bangkok Apiwat - Vientiane (ຄໍາສະຫວາດ) route covers a distance of 654 kilometers. It offers two round-trip services daily. Additionally, there are two round-trip services on the Udon Thani - Vientiane (ຄໍາສະຫວາດ) - Udon Thani route, totaling 4 trips per day.
Ticket sales for the first trip on July 19, 2024, began on July 10, with high demand resulting in all seats being quickly booked.
It is estimated that the four train services will attract more than 200,000 users annually, generating over 67 million baht in revenue. If demand increases, authorities will consider increasing the frequency of services.
The Vientiane (ຄໍາສະຫວາດ) railway station is located in Ban Khamsavath (ບ້ານຄໍາສະຫວາດ), Xaysettha district (ເມືອງໄຊເສດຖາ), just 7.5 kilometers north of Thanaleng (ທ່ານາແລ້ງ) dry port. It is a two-story station with two platforms, designed for passenger and freight transport using a meter-gauge system. The total construction cost was 994.68 million baht.
The Ministry of Transport and the State Railway of Thailand hope that this international train service will expand cooperation between the two countries, connecting rail transport networks and promoting regional growth. It will allow passengers arriving at Udon Thani airport to continue their journey to Vientiane by train without needing to transfer to other modes of transport as before, helping to drive Thailand's position as a regional hub for tourism and logistics.

This is the first train that originates from Bangkok and terminates at Vientiane, the capital of Laos, without the need to change trains as before. This makes traveling from Bangkok to Vientiane much more convenient than in the past.
