In a cordial bilateral meeting, the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to peace, tourism, and improving the quality of life for the people of both countries. Prime Minister Srettha emphasized that their joint visit aimed for common peace and prosperity.
On August 3, 2024, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, accompanied by his delegation, met with Dato' Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim at the Sungai Kolok border checkpoint in Narathiwat province. They were warmly greeted and engaged in a small-group bilateral discussion.
Prime Minister Srettha stated that their visit was aimed at promoting common peace and prosperity, demonstrating the unity, seriousness, and political will of both leaders to cooperate in maintaining peace along the border.
He thanked Malaysia for driving cooperation through meetings of the Border Trade and Trade and Investment Working Groups and expressed hope for continued collaboration through these meetings. Both sides agreed on cooperation regarding halal products and standards for mutual benefit.
During the meeting, they discussed cooperation in dredging the silted Golok River to prevent flooding. The Malaysian side requested assistance, and Prime Minister Srettha indicated that he would instruct the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize a meeting with the Ministries of Interior, Transport, and Agriculture and Cooperatives to consider further cooperation.
At the end of the meeting, both Prime Ministers received a briefing on the construction of a parallel bridge across the Golok River.
Prime Minister Srettha later traveled to the Pasir Mas District and Land Office in Kelantan, Malaysia, where he was welcomed with a traditional Kompang musical performance, a popular feature at festive events such as national parades and formal receptions.
The Thai and Malaysian Prime Ministers signed a guest book and had lunch together. Prime Minister Srettha expressed gratitude to the Malaysian Prime Minister for the warm reception, highlighting the strong friendship between the two countries. He mentioned that the Sungai Kolok bridge would facilitate the people of both nations and discussed plans for a special trade zone.
This meeting is seen as an opportunity to enhance trade and investment between the two countries, with Prime Minister Srettha planning to return to the area to observe progress.

He visited Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat and Rantau Panjang in Kelantan to review the bridge project and explore ways to develop the economy and connect southern Thailand with northern Malaysia.
He also mentioned discussions on road and rail development to boost goods and passenger transportation, and the Rubber City project linking Songkhla and Kedah, which would enhance rubber production for export. Additionally, he noted the importance of halal industries, with Malaysia's Pasir Mas Halal Park needing raw materials and products from Thailand. Finally, he highlighted the need to expedite the "Six Countries, One Destination" tourism initiative.
ISOC acknowledges the mission of the Railway Territorial Defense Unit and tracks statistics of terrorist incidents on trains in the southern border region. Col. Anucha confirms that train travel is safe.
At 10:00 AM on September 21st at Yala Railway Station, Lt. Gen. Thatchaphon Piemwut, Director of the Southern Border Provinces Peace-Building Command (SBPPC) of ISOC, Col. Sutthiphong Puechmongkol, Director of the SBPPC Information Operations Center, and the SBPPC team, along with the media, traveled to acknowledge the mission of the 2nd Special Operations Company of the Territorial Defense Command (Railway Territorial Defense Unit).
Lt. Col. Narong Nuthaphon, Commander of the 2nd Special Operations Company, Territorial Defense Command, revealed that the Railway Territorial Defense Unit is a tactical control unit under the Southern Border Provinces Territorial Defense Command and the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward. Its responsibility is to deploy Territorial Defense volunteers to provide security on all trains from Hat Yai Station in Songkhla Province through Pattani and Yala Provinces to Su-ngai Kolok Station in Narathiwat Province, a distance of approximately 270 kilometers. This includes all daily trains, both inbound and outbound, covering 35 stations and 2 waiting points.
The deployment of train security personnel is as follows: 18 trains per day are staffed with 8-10 Territorial Defense volunteers per train, utilizing approximately 80-120 volunteers daily. The train security operations are divided into 3 operational units:
1. Hat Yai Unit, located at Hat Yai Railway Station, is responsible for 10 trains per day, both inbound and outbound, including trains 171, 172 (Rapid Bangkok-Su-ngai Kolok-Bangkok), 985, 986 (Special Freight Bangkok-Su-ngai Kolok-Bangkok), 463, 464 (Local Phatthalung-Su-ngai Kolok-Phatthalung), 47, 38 (Special Express Bangkok-Su-ngai Kolok-Bangkok), and 169, 170 (Rapid Bangkok-Yala-Bangkok).
2. Yala Unit, located at Yala Railway Station, is responsible for 6 local trains per day, both inbound and outbound, including trains 453, 454 (Local Yala-Su-ngai Kolok-Yala), 455, 456 (Local Nakhon Si Thammarat-Yala-Nakhon Si Thammarat), and 451, 452 (Local Nakhon Si Thammarat-Su-ngai Kolok-Nakhon Si Thammarat).
3. Su-ngai Kolok Unit, located at Su-ngai Kolok Railway Station, is responsible for 2 local trains per day, both inbound and outbound, including trains 447, 448 (Local Surat Thani-Su-ngai Kolok-Surat Thani).
Areas of focus, risk areas, vulnerable areas, and areas with recurring incidents include: Ra-ngae District in Narathiwat (5 incidents: 3 ambushes, 2 bombings), Cho-airong District in Narathiwat (3 incidents: 1 insurgent neutralized, 2 ambushes), Rueso District in Narathiwat (6 incidents: 3 ambushes, 3 bombings), Raman District in Yala (4 incidents: 2 ambushes, 2 bombings), and Khok Pho District in Pattani (2 bombings).
Collaboration with other units includes working with the police to search and arrest individuals with illegal items on trains and jointly inspecting foreigners traveling on trains. Additionally, they provide facilitation and security for high-ranking officials from the central government who travel to the southern border provinces on official duty.
Col. Anucha Non Khu Khet Khong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward, revealed that after the railway police ceased their role last year, there has been no increase in the number of Railway Territorial Defense volunteers. This is because these volunteers are only assistants and do not have the authority to make arrests. However, if they encounter illegal activities or individuals committing offenses on the train, they will notify the authorities at the destination, and the police will be waiting there. He assured that the absence of police on trains has not had any impact, and the situation remains normal, not affecting train services.
Future measures will be stricter. If there is news of potential incidents on trains, units in the area will be instructed to elevate their security plans. Additionally, the public will be involved in assisting with security efforts.
Regarding the safety of Territorial Defense volunteers on trains, they will have bulletproof vests, and extra precautions will be taken in high-risk areas along the route. Volunteers on trains must be particularly cautious, as there have been incidents of attempted weapon seizures on trains, so carrying firearms must be done securely.
Col. Anucha affirmed that train travel remains a safe mode of transportation. In the future, measures will be enhanced with the implementation of AI systems and CCTV cameras in over 20 high-risk areas. It is expected that the presence of AI systems will further deter potential perpetrators from carrying out attacks.
SRT Opens Special-Rate Fruit Transport by Rail to Reduce Costs for Farmers in Three Southern Border Provinces

"Suriya" assigns SRT to launch special-rate fruit transport by rail to support and reduce costs for orchardists in three southern border provinces.
Mr. Suriya Juengrungruengkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, revealed that during the harvest season in the three southern border provinces - Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat - where there is abundant agricultural produce including rambutan, mangosteen, durian, and longkong, he has assigned the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to implement a project supporting farmers by offering special-rate fruit transport services by train from Sungai Padi Station to Bangkok. This aims to help distribute produce to markets and effectively reduce transportation costs for farmers.
Mr. Viroj Amornphaphol, Governor of SRT, added that while energy prices and logistics costs remain high, SRT has been assigned to implement a project to reduce living costs for fruit farmers in the three southern border provinces. The service offers special rates for transporting rambutan, mangosteen, durian, and longkong on special cargo train No. 986 from Sungai Kolok to Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) at a special rate of only 2 baht per kilogram, with a minimum service fee of just 20 baht. This helps reduce transportation costs for farmers and quickly distributes produce to consumers.
The service operates from various stations from Sungai Kolok to Pattani (including Sungai Kolok, Sungai Padi, Bukit, Cho-airong, Tanyongmat, Maruebo, Rueso, Raman, Yala, Khlong Sai, Pattani) to six destination stations: Nakhon Pathom, Salaya, Bang Bamru, Bang Sue Junction, Samsen, and Bangkok (Hua Lamphong).
This service, which runs from today until November 30, 2024, aims to facilitate transportation for fruit growers at lower costs, which can also reduce retail prices for consumers.
SRT is ready to enhance its potential in connecting agricultural product transportation from production sources directly to consumers and central market networks. This supports the increasing transport demands following the opening of the double-track railway project, improving efficiency and reducing transportation costs for the public and farmers, strengthening the grassroots economy.
