MRTA Expects Yellow Line Repairs By End of May, Urges Risk Mitigation Measures
Online Manager, April 29, 2024, 07:14
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) anticipates repairs to the Yellow Line monorail system to be completed by the end of May 2024. This follows an incident where a conductive steel plate fell from the track, prompting discussions with operator EBM to bolster safety measures and contingency plans.
Repairs Underway, Safety Review in Progress
Witthaya Phanmongkol, Acting MRTA Governor, stated: "Spare parts are being procured, and we expect the Yellow Line to resume normal service by the end of May."
The MRTA emphasizes passenger safety. Following the incident, focus has shifted to evaluating response procedures and pinpointing areas for improvement. This includes reviewing passenger evacuation plans, addressing system vulnerabilities, and reassessing spare parts inventory to mitigate future risks.
Service Disruptions and Reduced Ridership
The Yellow Line is currently operating in three segments with reduced frequency. This has caused longer wait times and an estimated 20% decline in ridership overall. Routes from Lat Phrao to Theparak, which typically see high passenger volumes, are most affected.
Revised Train Schedule
Lat Phrao (YL01) Hua Mak (YL11): Trains run every 10 minutes (5 minutes during rush hour)
Hua Mak (YL11) - Sri Iam (YL17): Shuttle service, upbound side only. Trains run every 25 minutes.
Sri Iam (YL17) - Samrong (YL23): Trains run every 10 minutes.
EBM has implemented a temporary 20% fare reduction until normal service resumes.
Update on repairs to the 'Yellow Line': The MRTA has outlined that repairs must be completed within this month, according to Bangkok Business Online. The Department of Rail reveals that all imported parts for the Yellow Line Electric Train have been acquired, and the private sector is currently rushing to fix it. It is expected to be fully operational by the end of May. The MRTA plans to discuss with EBM, review the plan, and implement measures to address potential risk points.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, Director General of the Department of Rail Transport, disclosed the progress of repairs to the MRT Yellow Line. The incident, where a conductor rail fell on the runway beam along with a spare part of the rail holder, occurred between Kelantan Station (YL12) and Sri Udom Station (YL16) heading towards Samrong Station (YL23) on March 28th. Currently, the Eastern Bangkok Monorail Company Limited (EBM), the concessionaire, has been working to remove the fallen conductive rail and has relocated the three trains stuck back to the maintenance center (Depot).
Simultaneously, the concessionaire is installing electrical conductive rail fastening equipment and gradually installing electrical conductive rails using some spare parts while awaiting the arrival of the electrical conductor rails in Thailand, scheduled for May 15, 2024. Additional equipment will then be installed before testing the train operation. It is anticipated that all issues will be resolved, and normal operations will resume by the end of May.
Currently, the Yellow Line has adjusted its train operation plan as follows:
1. Opening hours: 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
2. Special train schedules are in use for three periods:
- Lat Phrao Station (YL01) Hua Mak Station (YL11) Short Loop
- Hua Mak Station (YL11) Sri Iam Station (YL17) operates as a Shuttle Service on the upbound side (NB). The downbound side (SB) platform is temporarily closed.
- Sri Iam Station (YL17) Samrong Station (YL23) operates as a short loop using Hua Mak Station (YL11) and Sri Iam Station (YL17) as passenger transfer stations.
Mr. Wittaya Panmongkol, Deputy Governor (Operations) and Acting Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), emphasized MRTA's commitment to safety in service provision. Following the Yellow Line incident, MRTA has collaborated with EBM to assess all causes and mitigate the risk of recurrence. Plans for improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future are underway, with a focus on ensuring service providers have support and evacuation plans in place for passengers, to be executed promptly.
Yellow Line Train Service Postponed to June as Repairs Continue
Eastern Bangkok Monorail Company (EBM) announces delay due to pending international shipment of electrical rails.
Bangkok, Thailand May 8, 2024 The Yellow Line electric train, originally scheduled to resume normal service at the end of May, will now reopen in June. The Eastern Bangkok Monorail Company (EBM) is awaiting the arrival of essential electrical rails from abroad.
Suraphong Laoha-Anya, CEO of EBM, explained that a 6-kilometer section of the line requires replacement rails currently in transit. Temporary repairs are in place using existing stock, but supplies are insufficient. Other necessary components have been received via air transport.
Currently, some sections of the Yellow Line are operating on a one-way system, and bus services remain in place. Despite the disruption, ridership remains strong, with over 30,000 passengers daily. EBM continues to offer a 20% discount on fares until full repairs are complete.
Key Points:
Reason for Delay: Awaiting shipment of electrical rails necessary for repairs
June Opening: Full service expected to resume in June 2024
Current Status: Sections of the line operating on reduced schedule, bus service supplements train
Ridership: Remains above 30,000 passengers per day

His Majesty the King has graciously named the Yellow Line electric train route "Nakkhara Phiphat," which means "Urban Prosperity," following its commencement of commercial service on July 3, 2023.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) reported that the Ministry of Transport, through MRTA, has implemented the Yellow Line electric train project, running from Lat Phrao to Samrong. This project serves as a secondary public transport system (Feeder) to enhance and extend the mass transit network in Bangkok and its metropolitan area, facilitating public travel. Notably, this is the first time a monorail system is being used in Thailand, and it has been open for commercial service since July 3, 2023.
His Majesty the King has kindly named the Yellow Line metropolitan electric train route "นัคราพิพัฒน์ Nakkhara Phiphat" (pronounced Nak-ka-ra Phi-phat), meaning "Urban Prosperity." This brings great joy and auspiciousness to the Ministry of Transport, MRTA, and the public.
The Ministry of Transport and MRTA are committed to continuing the development of rail transport to ensure its completeness, provide convenience for the public, and fulfill His Majesty's royal initiative to sustain, preserve, and build upon public transportation and services for the benefit and happiness of the people.
The Nakkhara Phiphat electric train line spans 30.4 kilometers, featuring an elevated track throughout its length and serving 23 stations, operating from 6:00 AM to midnight.
Furthermore, the Yellow Line connects with four main electric train routes at various points: Lat Phrao Station connects with the MRT Blue Line, Lam Sali Intersection Station with the Orange Line project from the Thailand Cultural Center to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), Hua Mak Station with the Airport Rail Link and Eastern Railway, and Samrong Station with the Green Line from Bearing to Samut Prakan. Additionally, car users can park at the park-and-ride facilities at Si Iam and Lat Phrao stations, with services available from 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM.
