Officials from Myanmar Railways held the 38th coordination meeting to upgrade Yangon-Mandalay railway yesterday. The meeting on videoconference discussed the first phase of Yangon-Mandalay railway upgrade project (Yangon-Taungoo section), which was being implemented with Japanese ODA Loan. Uni0n Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung, officials from the Myanmar Railways and responsible persons from the JICA Myanmar Office Yangon, the Construction Management Consultants, and the FNS-JV, TEKKEN-RN JV and Tokyu companies which are the main contractors in civil works and signalling system in the project. The Uni0n Minster said at the meeting that the project plays a key role in socio-economic development of the country, and that it should be finalized without delay while adhering to construction standards and safety measures, as well as following guidelines for prevention of COVID-19 in implementing the project. Suspended Yangon-Okkan RBE railway will resume its services as from 1 July. PHOTP: Supplied
The RBE up and down trains operating between Yangon and Okkan will resume their operations starting from 1 July as the same schedules before, according to Myanma Railways (MR).
The RBE down-66 train will leave Oakkan railway station at 6 am and arrive at Yangon railway station at 9:35 am.
The RBE up-65 train will leave Yangon Central Railway Station at 4:30 pm and arrive at Okkan railway station at 8:10 pm.
The ticket fare for the train is K600 per person from Yangon to Okkan as usual, according to MR.
Before the coronavirus period, the Yangon-Okkan RBE train carried about 1,000 passengers daily. With the resuming of the Yangon-Okkan RBE train, the schedule of the circular train (B-3/4) and Yangon-Insein (Q-2) train has changed their timetables a little bit. CHINA Railway Eryuan Engineering Group (CREEG) has applied to conduct feasibility studies for a railway between Mandalay and Kyaukphyu, Myanmar.

The line is part of the Muse Mandalay railway, which CREEG and the Myanmar government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop in October 2018, the Myanmar Times reports.
The Muse-Mandalay MoU includes applying for permission to conduct feasibility studies to build the railway from Mandalay to Kyaukphyu, says Myanmar Railways general manager, Mr U Nyi Nyi Swe. The feasibility study takes two or three years.
The line would connect a deep sea port in Kyaukphyu, which is being developed by China, with Kunming, China, via Muse on the Myanmar-China border. The project would also connect Mandalay with Yangon, and improve access between China and the Indian Ocean.
The 431km Muse Mandalay line will be built for 160km/h operation, at a cost of around $US 8.9bn.
YANGON-Myanmar Railways(MR) is now planning to sign an agreement with Korea EXIM Bank aiming to take loans US$125 million for the upgrading of Mandalay-Myintgyina railroad section.
The Uni0n Parliament session on March 26th had approved taking loans from Korea EXIM Bank.
The new air-conditioned trains will take about 17 hours to travel the Mandalay-Myitkyina route, one hour less than other trains.
Myanma Railways (MR) signed a contract agreement with the Dawonsys Company to buy 100 new modernized train carriages under the Korean loans on December 5th, 2018.
The Ministry will use a US$ 45 million loan from Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the EXIM Bank to buy the train carriages.
A vessel carrying 10 new air-conditioned train carriages out of 100 and spare parts bought under a loan from South Korea arrived in Thilawa Jetty, Yangon, on January 7th.
Myanmar is cooperating not only with South Korea but also with Japan in the Yangon circular railroad upgrading project and the upgrading process of Yangon-Mandalay railroad.
Myanmar and Japan will also cooperate in Hanthawaddy airport project, it announced.
A total of US$2.7 billion from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be used to upgrade the Yangon-Mandalay railroad under a five-year plan from 2018 to 2023.
