Khru Nai Station Update: Factory Wall Removal for MRT Purple Line Entrances (April 2024)

As part of the MRT Purple Line Project (Tao Poon - Rat Burana, Kanchanaphisek Ring Road), the contractor, Italian-Thai Public Company Limited, has implemented additional traffic diversions on Suksawat Road. Inbound and outbound traffic flow is reduced to three lanes between Big C Suksawat and Soi Suksawat 47/1.
Khru Nai Station, the elevated terminus of the Southern Purple Line, is located in the area of Soi Suksawat 70. Recent progress includes the casting of piers, track preparation, and the dismantling of a factory wall to create the station's first entrance/exit. As of March 2024, civil works reached 13.50% completion. Khru Nai Station will have a total of four entrances and exits.
The Purple Line Project (Tao Poon - Rat Burana, Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) spans 23.6 kilometers and features 10 underground stations and 7 elevated stations. Park-and-ride facilities are being constructed at Bang Pakok Station and Rat Burana Station.
Wong Wian Yai Station: Southern Purple Line MRT (May 2024)
Project Overview:
Purple Line Project, Tao Poon Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road): This extensive MRT line includes both underground and elevated sections, connecting the Tao Poon area with Rat Burana on the Kanchanaphisek Ring Road.
Contractor: Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited (Contract 4, Saphan Phut Dao Khanong section).
Construction Progress (March): Civil engineering work reached 30.39% completion.
Wong Wian Yai Station Specifics:
Status: Construction in progress, with traffic diversions on Somdet Phrachao Taksin Road (inbound, 4 lanes closed, both directions reduced to 2 lanes).
Location: Underground station adjacent to the existing Wongwian Yai intersection, beneath Somdet Phra Road into Taksin.
Access Points: 4 total entry/exit points.
Connections: Wong Wian Yai Station (BTS Silom Line) and the future Wong Wian Yai Station (Red Line Project, Hua Lamphong Mahachai section).
Purple Line Project Details:
Route: Crosses the Chao Phraya River via an underground tunnel, extending towards the Rat Burana District and terminating at Khru Nai in Samut Prakan Province.
Stations: 17 total (10 underground, 7 elevated)
Distance: 23.6 kilometers
MRTA would like to provide an update on the construction progress of the Purple Line project, Tao Poon - Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road), as of the end of March 2024. This update includes a tour of the work on the Thonburi side, connecting with the Phra Nakhon side, around Saphan Phut Station - Wongwian Yai - Somdet Phra Pinklao Hospital.
Representatives from the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) visited the area to inspect the Pink Line extension and the Purple Line project.
Mr. Witthaya Panmongkol, Deputy Governor (Operations) and Acting Governor of MRTA, along with Mr. Kittikorn Tanpao, Deputy Governor (Engineering and Construction), also Chairman of the Supervisory Committee, conducted inspections to ensure safety measures were in place during the construction of these mass rapid transit projects. The visit focused on examining safety measures, traffic management, and environmental impact mitigation strategies for the electric train projects. This aspect of oversight aligns with the priorities set by Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Transport, and Mr. Suraphong Piyachote, Deputy Minister of Transport.
Specifically, the inspection included the MT01 Muang Thong Thani station construction area of the Pink Line Extension Project, Si Rat - Muang Thong Thani Station section, to address concerns regarding incidents such as liquid cement falling onto vehicles on the road. Measures implemented by the concessionaire included the installation of double layers of protection netting and concrete tarpaulins, as well as the deployment of lookouts and emergency teams during construction activities.
Additionally, the inspection covered the elevated runway structure construction area of the Purple Line Project, particularly the Rat Burana Station Phra Pradaeng Station Industrial Ring Road section, focusing on safety measures at heights, including the installation of crane leg pads, fall protection rails, and stable scaffolding structures.
Mr. Witthaya emphasized the importance of adhering to construction standards and safety regulations, urging consulting companies and contractors to prioritize quality control, proper training, and supervision of workers to ensure compliance with safety standards and contractual obligations. He underscored that incidents impacting safety could erode public confidence in these large-scale construction projects, which span public roads.
Following the site visits, Mr. Witthaya stressed the need for robust traffic management, particularly for the Pink Line MRT Extension Project, recommending measures to enhance visibility and safety for road users, especially at night. He also inquired about safety protocols, including the Permit to Work system and accident reporting procedures, in the Purple Line MRT project, emphasizing the importance of standardization and cooperation among all stakeholders.
The MRTA maintains rigorous supervision and monitoring of safety measures throughout the construction of mass rapid transit projects under its purview. Committees comprising executives and oversight personnel from MRTA, consulting firms, and concessionaire companies ensure comprehensive oversight and evaluation of safety performance at every stage of construction. Moreover, monthly inspections by specialized teams, including project staff and safety officers, further reinforce adherence to safety and environmental standards.

Traffic Update:
One inbound and one outbound traffic lane on Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Road have been closed near the center island.
The closure extends from the front of Big C Dao Khanong to Soi Somdet Phrachao Taksin 41 (approximately 530 meters).
Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, responsible for constructing the line's track, elevated station, parking, and park-and-ride facilities, initiated the closure.
As of March 2024, civil work progress on Contract 5 (Dao Khanong Kru Nai section) stands at 13.50%.
Daokhanong Station (formerly Chom Thong Station) Entrances/Exits:
Entrance/Exit 1: 4-story commercial building near Bang Sakae Canal, inbound side of Somdet Phrachao Taksin Road.

Purple Line's Chao Phraya River Underpass to be Thailand's Deepest Rail Tunnel
Construction has officially begun on the deepest electric train tunnel in Thailand. The tunnel is a key component of the Bangkok MRT Purple Line's southern extension, connecting the Tao Poon and Rat Burana sections.
Minister of Transport, Mr. Suriya Jungrungruangkit, presided over the opening ceremony on April 26, 2024. The event was a major milestone for the 82 billion baht project, drawing attendance from high-level officials involved in its development.
The Purple Line's southern extension project spans six construction contracts. Utilizing a total of seven tunnel boring machines, construction progress has already reached 31% since its initiation in April 2022.
Technology and Progress
The joint venture CKST-PL has deployed the first tunnel boring machine near the Royal Thai Army Ordnance Department. Using soil pressure balance technology, these machines are well-suited for the clay and sand conditions present in Bangkok's underground. This technology effectively manages high groundwater pressure, minimizing ground-level disruption.
This first machine will carve a 5.89-kilometer tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.7 meters, operating at an average depth of 15 - 35 meters. Two more tunnel borers for this segment of the project are scheduled for launch in May and October.
A Landmark Underpass
The Chao Phraya River underpass will be the most significant feature of the Purple Line's southern extension. Projected for completion in late 2026, this portion of the tunnel will be Thailands deepest rail underpass. It will connect Sam Yot Station on the Phra Nakhon side of the river with Saphan Phut Station on the Thonburi side.
The Chao Phraya River portion of the tunnel is expected to reach a maximum depth of 41 meters below the riverbed. Advanced tunnel boring machines and construction techniques will ensure both structural integrity and passenger safety throughout the tunnel's 120-year lifespan.
Parliament House Station, Contract No. 1, Tao Poon Section - National Library Construction project is part of the Purple Line extension. It involves station construction, underground tunnel work, and other buildings, spanning approximately 4.9 kilometers. The project is valued at 19,433 million baht and is being executed by the joint venture CKST-PL. Currently, the overall construction progress stands at 42.52%.
Memorial Bridge Station (Purple Line, Tao Poon - Rat Burana, Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) - May 2024 Update
Located beneath Prajadhipok Road before the Ban Khaek intersection, Memorial Bridge Station is the first subway station on the Thonburi side of the line. It connects to Sam Yot Station on the Phra Nakhon side. Station construction is underway, including demolition, relocation of utilities, and creation of the station's retaining wall, reaching an approximate depth of 44 meters.
As of April 2024, civil works are 28.42% complete under Contract 3, managed by the ITD-NWR MRT joint venture. This contract covers tunnel design and construction, track laying, and the building of underground stations within the Phan Fa - Saphan Phut section.
To facilitate tunnel excavation at Memorial Bridge Station, additional traffic diversions have been implemented on Prajadhipok Road near the 100th Anniversary Memorial. These diversions will remain in place from April 19th to June 30th, 2024. Memorial Bridge Station will have a total of four entry/exit points.
Overall, the Purple Line Project (Tao Poon - Rat Burana Section, Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) shows 31.89% completion of civil works as of April 2024. The complete route extends 23.63 kilometers with 17 stations (10 underground over 14.29 km and 7 elevated spanning 9.34 km).

MRTA Conducts Nighttime Safety Inspection of Purple Line Construction
Bangkok, Thailand May 9, 2024 The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) Safety Office Occupational Health and Working Environment team conducted a nighttime safety inspection (Night Audit) of the ongoing construction on the Purple Line, Tao Poon - Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) section.
The inspection covered the areas from Si Yan Station to Somdet Phra Pinklao Hospital Station, continuing to the elevated section between Rat Burana Station and Pracha Uthit Intersection Station. The team focused on ensuring equipment readiness, proper safety signage, material storage, and adherence to working-at-heights safety protocols.
The MRTA emphasizes its commitment to the Declaration on Safety in Construction of the Zero Fatal Accident Mass Rapid Transit System Project" and urges all construction personnel to strictly follow safety standards.
