Progress updates on Taling Chan-Salaya, Bang Sue-Phaya Thai-Makkasan-Hua Mak ("Missing Link"), and Taling Chan-Siriraj sections.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is preparing details for the Red Line suburban railway extension project from Taling Chan to Salaya (14.8 km), with an additional budget of 10,670.27 million baht. This information, including traffic management plans and safety measures, will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport in May 2024 for consideration by the Cabinet.
The SRT Board is expected to approve the design of the Bang Sue-Phaya Thai-Makkasan-Hua Mak ("Missing Link") section (25.9 km), including the Ratchawithi Station, in June 2024. Following SRT Board approval, the project will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport and then the Cabinet.
The Ratchawithi Station design has been adjusted to move the location closer to Ramathibodi Hospital. This underground station will feature a skywalk connecting to the hospital for passenger convenience. Due to this change and integration with the high-speed rail project connecting three airports, the construction cost has increased slightly.
The Taling Chan-Siriraj section (5.7 km, budget 4,616 million baht) awaits the start of construction on the overlapping Orange Line Bang Khun Non-Min Buri (Suwinthawong) section by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). The Supreme Administrative Court's decision on a dispute regarding the Orange Line project will determine the timeline for the Red Line extension.
Moving forward with the dark red line train, "Transportation" is preparing to propose to the CRTC to cut a section: "Hua Lamphong - Wong Wian Yai," which faces community expropriation issues. The plan involves marking the construction line from "Wongwian Yai - Mahachai," revealing that there are southern purples and greens that can facilitate travel. The SRT has allocated a budget of 140 million baht to prepare for a reconsideration of the study.
A news report from the Department of Rail Transport (RTA) revealed the progress of the Dark Red Line suburban train system project from Hua Lamphong to Wong Wian Yai and Mahachai. It stated that the route is part of the master plan for developing the rail mass transit system in Bangkok and surrounding areas (M-Map) over a 20-year period (2010-2029), which includes 12 routes. However, currently, there is no progress due to issues such as dense communities and changing economic conditions leading to land use changes. As a result, the project's value is high due to the need for expropriation of a large amount of land and real estate. Additionally, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the bridge crossing the Chao Phraya River has not yet been considered.
To ensure that the Red Line suburban railway project aligns with the master plan and serves as the main network in southern Bangkok and surrounding areas, there will be a change to the original Red Line train route. The proposal involves cutting the Hua Lamphong - Wong Wian Yai section, which is problematic, and presenting it to the Land Traffic System Organization Committee (CCC) for further consideration.
The preliminary red line route for the Wongwian Yai - Mahachai section will be developed in two phases. The first phase will end the Red Line route at the big roundabout in Mahachai. Plans have been prepared to connect it with other mass transit networks for maximum convenience, including connecting to the Southern Purple Line at Wongwian Yai station and to the Green Line (Silom Line) at Wongwian Yai Station. It will also allow for connection to the MRT Blue Line at Tha Phra Station via the Southern Purple Line.
The Red Line electric train project, according to the master plan, aims to create an efficient suburban electric train system (Commuter Train, CT) connecting Bangkok with suburban areas and main outer cities. The system is designed to operate in conjunction with existing Long Distance Trains (LD) and freight trains (Freight Train, FT) operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The red line will connect northern suburbs (Don Mueang, Rangsit, and Pathum Thani areas) with southern suburban areas (Bang Bon and Mahachai areas) to the city center.
A study conducted in 2006 on the Red Line suburban railway system project's Hua Lamphong - Mahachai section, covering a total distance of 36.56 kilometers, revealed that it would require an elevated structure and cost approximately 53,064 million baht. The project is divided into two sections: the Hua Lamphong - Wong Wian Yai section, covering a distance of 3.40 kilometers and costing approximately 4,934 million baht, and the Wongwian Yai-Mahachai section, covering a distance of 33.16 kilometers and costing approximately 48,129 million baht.
Additionally, a detailed study and design were conducted in 2007 for the suburban electric train system, along with long-distance trains, to connect to the mass transit system in Bangkok and surrounding areas (Mahachai - Pak Tho). This project was divided into three sections: Mahachai - Ban Laem (0.85 kilometers), Ban Laem-Mae Klong (33.73 kilometers), and Mae Klong-Pak Tho (30.50 kilometers), with the total project value for all three sections approximately 38,182 million baht.
However, due to inconsistencies in the original studies of the two projects, the Red Line section from Hua Lamphong - Wong Wian Yai - Mahachai uses the Standard Gauge route (width 1.435 meters), while the railway section Mahachai - Pak Tho uses the Meter Gauge route (width 1 meter), resulting in the inability to provide through service. Currently, the Red Line train sections Bang Sue-Rangsit, Bang Sue-Taling Chan, and the other four extension routes use meter gauge routes, necessitating adjustments.
The SRT has proposed a budget of 140 million baht for 2024 to review the results of the project feasibility study, conduct detailed design studies, and prepare bidding documents. This includes studying the feasibility of the Hua Lamphong-Mahachai section of the project, with a budget limit of 20 million baht, and studying the detailed design and preparing the EIA report for the Wongwian Yai - Mahachai section project, with a budget limit of 120 million baht.
Building a railway from Hua Lamphong to Wong Wian Yai would be difficult. Connecting the Mahachai, Mae Klong, and Pak Tho railway lines should be easier.
Passengers from the south will easily go to Mae Klong and Mahachai, while people from Bangkok will travel to Mahachai, Mae Klong can use the Southern Purple Line train. That's it.
The railway is connected to Pak Tho Station, making it more convenient for major carriage repairs or transporting goods, similar to the Suphanburi line.
