"Cho Thavee-AS" won the 28 billion baht bid to build the Khon Kaen-Nong Khai double-track railway, the first line of Phase 2. The project is expected to be signed by December, with construction starting immediately and operations planned to begin in 2027.
According to the "Daily News Transportation Innovation Team," the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has submitted the results of the electronic bidding process for the Phase 2 Khon Kaen-Nong Khai double-track railway project to the subcommittee for consideration before presenting it to the SRT board. The subcommittee requested SRT to further negotiate the price with Cho Thavee-AS, the lowest bidder, before sending the proposal to the board. The goal is to sign the contract by December 2024, with construction starting immediately and expected completion and operation by 2027.
Four companies participated in the bid: 1) Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction PCL, 2) CH. Karnchang PCL, 3) Unique Engineering and Construction PCL, and 4) Cho Thavee-AS Joint Venture.
The Khon Kaen-Nong Khai double-track railway is the first of seven lines in the Phase 2 double-track railway project. SRT is executing it based on the Cabinets resolution from October 16, 2023, to construct a new parallel track along the existing railway for a total of 167 kilometers. The line will connect with the Phase 1 Chira-Khon Kaen double-track railway, starting at Kilometer Marker 454+000 at Khon Kaen Station and ending at Kilometer Marker 623+000 at Nong Khai Station. It will have high platforms and 14 stations, with 4 stopping points and container yards at Non Sa-at, Nong Takai, and Na Ta stations. The total construction budget, including signal and telecommunications systems, is 28.7 billion baht.
The project will require 184 rai of land, with land acquisition costs of 369 million baht. Construction is expected to take 36 months or 3 years. In the first year of service, passenger traffic is expected to be 3,300 people per day, rising to 5,500 people per day by year 30. Freight is projected to be 3.3 million tons per year in the first year, increasing to 4.2 million tons by year 30.
This route is vital for connecting the Chira-Khon Kaen junction through Udon Thani, ending at Nong Khai Station. It will enhance the efficiency of the northeastern rail system, supporting both freight and passenger transport, reducing logistics costs, cutting travel time by 1 to 1.5 hours, saving fuel, and reducing environmental pollution. The project will also improve safety by lowering the risk of accidents at road-rail crossings.
This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Transports policy to accelerate the construction of double-track railways and new railway lines nationwide to enhance the efficiency of Thailands rail transport system as a key mode of transport. It will facilitate travel, support regional freight links, and contribute to economic growth and tourism in the country.

Complaints Arise Over Inadequate Shelter at 5-Year-Old Double-Track Train Station
INN News, October 24, 2024 - 10:27 AM
Residents of Buriram province are expressing their frustration over the lack of adequate shelter from the sun and rain at the Buriram train station, part of Thailand's first double-track railway line, which opened over five years ago. Despite numerous complaints to the State Railway of Thailand, the issue remains unresolved.
The station's platform roof is criticized for its insufficient height and slope, leaving waiting passengers exposed to harsh sunlight and heavy rain. Furthermore, the steep footbridge connecting the station building to the platform poses difficulties for the elderly and disabled, hindering their access to train services.
Observations at the station between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM confirm these complaints, with passengers seeking refuge from the sun in the station building, under the platform pillars, or beneath the footbridge. The roof design, while prioritizing train operation safety and ventilation, fails to provide effective shelter throughout the day, except perhaps at noon.
Adding to the concerns, the footbridge, towering over 7 meters high, has led to incidents of elderly passengers fainting due to exhaustion. Ironically, despite the railway's emphasis on safety, a crossing for the disabled and wheelchairs exists 300-400 meters away from the station, unsupervised and potentially hazardous.
Locals suggest a safer solution would be a ground-level crossing near the ticket office, supervised by railway staff already present on the platform to assist passengers during train arrivals and departures. This ongoing issue highlights a persistent problem with the Jira Junction-Khon Kaen double-track project, which has remained unaddressed for over five years.
